My favorite craft is counted cross-stitch.  I always have at least two projects going at once. Right now I am working on a primitive-look sampler and also a small country piece for my kitchen.  I would love to hear from others who do cross-stitch. We could exchange ideas, favorite patterns and tips, etc., with each other.

Cheryl, it would be fun to exchange patterns. What kind of patterns interest you? I have been cross stitching for 29 years. My current project is called bathtime; it is of a baby in a wash bowl sucking on a wash cloth. |

I started years ago then got busy with life and 7 children then started again in 2008 then moved and moved then this January I started up again and have done 11 projects,and am working on a Tinkerbell for my 15yr old granddaughter. I mostly do kits but I have lots of patterns too, and finished leftover kits if anyone wants to exchange that would be fun. I love getting new patterns Cheryl |

I'm in the homestretch on a project and getting that feeling of excitement when I'm about to go on the hunt for the next one. This one has been fun. Lots of color changes. It's a basket full of fruit and flowers.
Hallie, I like the bookmark idea; I'll have to look into that. Those are good as gifts too with Christmas coming up. Oh, I lived in Bloomington IN for a couple years and worked in Carmel. I've since moved away but enjoyed my time in your fair state. :) |

at one time many years ago at a shop in Milton WI- it was called the Spinning Wheel. My cousin and I would go almost weekly there to stock up on Cross Stitch supplies. There was a pattern that was done on black aidia cloth and the pattern was a small country church at Christmas time and it had stitched in one upper area "Silent Night". Does anyone know this pattern and where I could get it? thanks so much for all of the help!

I had to jump in on this topic! I love to stitch too, so much so I used to own a shop. I closed the shop last year but of course, I still stitch!
My favorite patterns to stitch are samplers and I only stitch on linen. Silk threads are first choice and of course I go to the overdyed cottons if silk isn't being used.
My favorite designers are:
The Drawn Thread, Blue Ribbon Designs, Indigo Rose. I also like Little House Needleworks and La D Da designs.
I have so much leftover from my shop, I should do a give away on this thread!

I have been a cross stitcher for over 30 years and enjoy making samplers. Also Christmas ornaments as gifts, though not as many as Amy! Samplers to commemorate family weddings, births, graduations, etc. They are such a nice keepsake. I made a sampler many years ago for my parents 40th anniversary and it is now in my sewing room since they have both passed away. I can remember my mother teaching me as a teenager crewel embroidery with all of the different stitches and I then went on the counted cross stitch. I still have 2 of my teenage works that my mother had framed.
I have a friend whose mother in law died recently at the age of 92. She was an avid stitcher and had boxes and boxes full of floss, aida cloth, hand towels, pillowcases, etc. My friend asked me if I would like the supplies to teach my 6 grand daughters. So I couldn't refuse that offer! She brought a bulging grocery size bag to work every day for 10 days! So much floss...I could open a shop! Also some latch hook kits in there and crewel embroidery.
I alternate between quilting and cross stitch now. The winter was spent sewing alot of purses and bags, and quilting some wall hangings. Now I am outside more getting the garden planted and enjoying some sunshine. Time for a new cross stitch project, something to carry with me on our adventures this summer.

Love to cross stitch. Have been doing it since the late 80's. I am working on my 12th and 13th Paula Vaughan projects. I always tell myself the is the last big one I am going to do but have failed to keep that resolution as they all have things I love in every picture, quilts, baskets, and flowers, how can you go wrong? Keep on XXXXXing. It's good therapy and a whole lot cheaper than a psychiatrist!!!!! |

I love Paula Vaughn. I have a book of her most famous paintings to cross stitch and once I finish with my teddy bear afghan (which is going to take me forever, lol) I am going to work on one of her designs.

I like to just collect the magazines. I do have a few kits but I see so many I don't like..
You could say I'm a floss collector. When Wal-Mart disscontinued their XS supplies I bought one of every color, some two. Hubby let me, encouraged me even! Said it would be cheaper on him in the long run! lol I just stitch on Aida, I like 16 ct. I've got some DMC 14 ct that I don't like, but it's my big project and I'm not starting over! I like to do pre-finished items, that way I don't have to spend the money at the framers. You are very lucky Madelynne that your husband builds yours! Do you stretch them and all that yourself? I would like to learn how. I've done smaller pieces but they weren't so hard.
Our group really isn't non-profit organized charity yet. But would like to be. Need more money and tax papers and all that to get that status I think. None of us have that figured out yet.

Jeannie, that is terrific! Your memory sampler is so neat. I'd love to see some of those fourteen samplers.
Marcy, that sounds like some serious work. What a labor of love.
Lori, I hear you on sitting still. I have chronic pain and so I hurt if I sit still more than a half hour or so. I tell myself I will get a certain small section done and then I quit. Slow and steady, LOL...
Chelsea, what a great keepsake that will be for her.

My mom liked blackwork and whitework and designed almost all of the things she made. I've done a couple of my own designs for cross stitch, just simple things. So are y'all planning to go nonprofit charity with your organization? What a great idea it is.
Madelynne, that is so neat that he does the frames. I know that the cute ones cost a bunch. I also hear you about picking out work. I have a bit I need to pick out; I thought I'd change the colors up and it looks bad so I'm picking that little bit back out again. I have the no-line bifocals with a complicated prescription due to the first round of MS in my optic nerve. With the heavy prism I've had to get used to them since they did this new set. Maybe now I can do work on something besides 14 count Aida.
Amy, I think that would be smart to go ahead and start on the next ones.
Sherone, I had to go look up Paula Vaughn online. Wow, her stuff is so pretty! They do look like they would be tough.
I'd like to do on of the samplers that is mainly cross stitch but does have some specialty stitches in it, things like the Algerian Eye stitch, etc.
So I'm curious about everyone's stitching. Do you use Aida or the evenweave/linen fabric? Do you buy kits at all? Are you a floss collector, LOL?

That's a great photo. Love the sampler, and that quilt really catches my eye. Fun, cheery colors. It's been years since I did any cross stitching. I loved it. Very de-stressing, and I love to have something to occupy my hands while watching the news or a movie and resting from a hot day working. Have you entered any in county fairs? 'Tis the season! Get a little recognition and maybe some pin money for your craftwork!

If this photo comes out right, you will see a sampler I did in memory of my grandmother, and a quilt of hers I had finished. Anyway, it is the sampler type I love to stitch. There are fourteenof them going up my staircase, and I guess you could say I am addicted to stitching and quilting.

I make 48 cross-stitch ornaments to go in most of my Christmas cards each year. I have the date on them, which is why when, one year I decided to stop doing it, that there was an "outcry" from friends and family, as they didn't want the collection to stop. We have been married 20 years this June, so I have done a lot of stitching! It didn't start out as 48; only about 12 to give to members of our wedding party (I needed something to do when watching my husband play softball), but somehow it morphed into a much bigger project. I love to x-stitch, but I hate when I am doing it "under the gun" (like when it is November). I actually accomplished a New Year's Resolution this year, as the 2009 ones are already done. I have been thinking of starting the 2010 ones, as I like to keep some in my purse or in the car for times in which I have a few minutes to kill.

I have been doing counted cross-stitch since about 1980. Mind you I was in my late teens then. I still like to do it. My husband has started to make my frames for me and then I paint them. I really like to do samplers. I have done many for family and friends. Some of my favorite patterns comes from http://www.shepherdsbush.net/. I now need bifocals and sometimes it is hard to see the small holes but how rewarding is it when it is done and hanging. The worst part of counted cross-stitch for me is taking out the wrong stitches, like when your pattern is off just one space! Have fun and it is nice to know there are die-hards like me.

I love looking through old magazines for ideas and things. I can usually find them at the thrift. Cross Stitch and Country Craft is a really nice one. But they are so detailed and look complecated that I scare myself into not starting them. The only magazine I can get locally is The Cross Stitcher and it's ok. I did find 2 others at my other grocery store. Would love to subscribe, maybe someday.
Lori, just stick with it, you'll finish it eventually then every time you look at it you can sign and say Yay I'm done! lol
Hallie, do you have pics to share?! My husband is Irish and that's why I was drawn to this SAL. It seemed last year there were quite a few mystery SAL going on. There was a Spanish Sampler I was thinking about, but then the Ink Circles one came out and I just had to do that one instead! I have all the charts, just waiting to find the time to sit and stitch. I try to get some stitching done in the afternoon if the kids are quite or napping. By then my energy has worn off from cleaning and what-not all morning so if I've all ready done some of my chores I can reward myself with stitchy time, right?! lol
Also if you check out the Teddy blog on my signature line.. a group I'm with, we stitch up tee shirts for bears to give to children in need. We have given away around 100 so far. Just need to get some more bears now. And the tees we have all stitched up.
Do any of you gals like blackwork? A friend of mine designs some really neat stuff

I literally just started my very first cross stitch project yesterday. I'm working on it as a gift for my sister for graduating high school. She is 18 and her graduation is coming up soon. I have already stitched a grad cap on it and her name. I will be stitching "Class of 2009" and "Everett High School" as well as symbols of her favorite activities and clubs from high school. I will frame it when I am finished. It is turning out nicely! :)

I have been working on a snowman counted cross stitch project for years. I work on it then set it down, then work on it some more. I have had the hardest time trying to finish it! I find a new craft to do and start that and move on. I'm just having a hard time sitting still long enough to finish- I would take any inspiration any farm friend would like to forward on! thanks!

Wow, you have done some really nice ones. That one you are working on now is gorgeous. I'm part Irish so I love stuff like that.
The only time I cross-stitch is while we watch DVD's. The piece I am working on now I hope to finish by December, maybe. It was a pattern I got from Cross Country Stitching. One of these days I am going to subscribe or buy some back issues. I also like the old CountryStitch magazines.

I get a magazine, called The Magazine Antiques, and they always have some gorgeous antique samplers in it. Some of them are simply amazing. Cross-stitch eye candy, LOL.
I would love to see photos of past and present projects if anyone would want to do that.

I love to cross stitch. Right now I am working on a Teddy Bear and Toys afghan with thirteen different blocks. It is going to take me a while to finish it, but the time spent is going to be worth it! Or at least I hope it is. I am going to back it with some fleece once it is finished so that the stitches in the back do not show. Hopefully it will be one of those pieces that will be passed down through the years.

I love cross-stitch too. Right now I am trying to complete a big reproduction sampler.....I love samplers, especially the old ones. I worked for 15 years with a company called Country Cross-Stitch and was their designer. Since that company closed, I do not stitch as often, but will always love it!
