There are two web sites I would suggest for embroidery. Secrets of Embroidery - they sell designs of course but also have a news letter that discusses different digitizing programs and their applications. The other one is Advanced Embroidery - their digitized designs are spectacular.

Sheri, I have not digitized my own yet. . . still trying to decide on which program to purchase. .. they are very expensive and want the most inclusive one once I decide.
Love Martha Pullen's things too! I believe I have a few of her embroidery designs as well. I actually purchased my machine because of it's capabilities to do quilting and heirloom sewing! The embroidery part was a bonus. I have an extensive embroidery collection at this point in time, enough to have lots of fun with!

Joanna do you digitize your own designs? I have played at it with varying results. I have the Autodigitizing program that Viking/Pfaff marketed about 5 years ago. I bought a tutorial and that helped a lot. Now they have changed programs again - Viking is notorious for that along with soaking you for the updates. I love my machine but that is a drawback for Viking considering the insane cost of the machines in the first place. I have been using a lot of the antique patterns that were digitized by Martha Pullen based on her vintage clothing collection. I really like the quality of the embroideries and using them for re-sale is not an issue. I am an artist and like to do my own drawings so eventually would like to be able to digitize my own. My biggest problem is time - I am spread thin over so many things here between the animals and the gardens. Right now I am committed to this wedding in Sept. which will be here so I have a lot of yard work to get done on top of making all the dresses. I am very lucky as I have a wonderful sewing room with huge windows and lots of light. My kids and friends all say that I would be able to sell anything I make (I do a lot of different arts and crafts) my biggest dilemma is what to choose, how to market, and pricing. I also do marquetry pictures and boxes. I would love to find a way to market them as well. Perhaps a gallery somewhere. Spokane is notorious for cheap pricing as most people here only want it cheap not necessarily quality. I ran into that when I was designing and building custom kitchens and bathrooms. Any advice on the digitizing would be great. Do you use Embird?

Sheri, what BEAUTIFUL work!!!! Oh my gosh, I think if you were able to have a few professional pictures taken of your work so you could advertise your services. . . well girl, you would have an instant business!
When I started out, I made things to give as gifts. Then I dabbled at the craft fairs. . . which would be a hit or miss affair. .to many variables. So I finally started sewing as a piece worker, doing the kinds of things that others did not want to do at cheap money. . . this was good to get my feet wet but not enough to sustain myself with. So I finally developed my own niche and started selling by consignment and through advertisements in Country Sampler and Country Market Place.
Now that I have moved to the Great North Woods, I am developing my own line ( my personal designs) and I sell locally and on the web. Occasionally I will advertise in a major magazine or through the classifieds. .. usually in the fall and through the holidays.
The best advice I have to offer, Start out with just a few items to offer and grow as you go! Feel free to email me any time if you need help getting going, finding supplies etc. I love helping someone achieve their dreams!!

How did you get into sewing for a living? I would very much like to be able to supplement my income with my crafts. My specialty is edwardian style clothing - especially lace insertion/tucks and embroidery. I wish I had some pictures to show you. I will try to take a close up of the train on the wedding dress that I posted on the previous page with a lot of embroidery and beading. I have made several Christening outfits for grandchildren and friends. White on white is my passion so it's difficult to get good photos.

I have a Singer Quantum XL 6000 Since I sew for a living, this was a dream come true! The tea towels in the picture are blanks, left over from another project. (I usually sew my own.)
What have you created with yours? Do you have any pictures?

Here are a couple of the tea towels I have done by machine. I sell my creations in a gift shop called "Creative Natives" in Colebrook, NH.

Wow, we sure do have a great group of gals!! I am amazed at all the wonderful projects that all of you are working on.
I too have many "unfinished Projects" that are always in some state of being worked on. You will always know where I sit or stand. . . there are projects at the ready. . .LoL!

I am working on a "barn raising knitted quilt" for my youngest (age 5 tomorrow). It is a throw sized blanket for nap time at kindergarten in the fall. Also I am stitching him an embroidered pillow case for his nap pillow. The pillow case is for his birthday tomorrow, the throw will take me all summer to make.

Ready to put the binding on an Irish Chain quilt. Just getting started on a baby blanket for great grandbaby #4.
So many projects, so little time. What I would really like to do is not start another project until I finish ALL my projects. I have a half knitted scarf, set of "day of the week" dish towels, on and on, too many to mention. I should make a list and finish one at a time. But then a new baby would come along and would have to stop and do a new blanket. |

Sheri, that dress is beautiful!
I am trying to get started on my mom's Mother's Day gift. She wants a doll bigger than the one that I made her for her birthday. I went to the print shop the other day to have them enlarge the pattern. I told the gal that I wanted the new pattern to be two times the size of the old one. (I was hoping for about a 36" doll) So I finally got around to piecing the pattern together yesterday and it's bigger than me. aaarrggg. Back to the drawing board.

Oh my, the wedding dress is so very beautiful! Wow, what industrious farmgirls we are -goodness sakes, alive! We're doing skirts, aprons, tea towels, paintings, quilts, shopping bags, ornaments, prayer sawls, stuffed animals, wedding dresses, dollys, handbags, spinning/carding,weaving yarn, lace, bedspreads, afghans, dishcloths, clothespin holders/aprons, pincushions, mens ties, yard work, gardening, curtains, hammocks for varmits?, parrot toys, socks, and de-cluttering, phew! no room for that old devil here! This is a great topic - glad you asked, its so nice to know (and see, we sure do like pictures!) what others are doing.

I am getting ready to start on my daughter's wedding dress. Just finished making little cloth sacks to hold the lavender that we will throw at the bride...(I was going to pack little sacks of lavender in with my washed wool so it will smell good and also aide in keeping the moths out of it.)
Lambing is about over and then the wedding and then gardening and washing wool, spinning wool.

Donna, I would love to see a picture of your socks when you are done.
I am teaching myself to knit so I can make socks and mittens ( I crochet for now). Also, post pictures of your loom and your weaving too!! Would love to "see" your loom.

I'm knitting a pair of socks as a birthday gift. Also, I am learning how weave on a rigid heddle loom. On Sunday I learned how to warp the loom and am in the process of weaving a scarf.

I'm working on a painting, too. My girlfriend had to put down her beloved dog, Rocket so I'm doing a portrait of him for her. He really was a special dog and companion to her.
