Posted - Apr 01 2009 : 1:36:09 PM Recession-ready, budget-loving, cheap-n-chic - whatever you want to call it, the swap is open for signups. For those of us who love swaps but sometimes the cost of materials and postage keep you from participating, I came up with one to do on the cheap. The bag requires only 3/8 yard main fabric, 3/8 yard lining fabric, and a 9" zipper. That's it! Best of all, the pattern is a free download(link below). The finished bag when folded will fit into a 9x12 manila envelope.
It took me about an hour and a half total to make. My effort is pictured below; I made it from leftover Amy Butler fabric I had used for my laundry room sink skirt. But imagine the possibilities...red bandana print with cowgirl lining...pastel eyelet with solid white lining...jeweled velvet patchwork with shimmery satin lining...the possibilities are endless, but you probably already have enough in your fabric stash to come up with something wonderful.
Retro Tie Bag pattern link (note, you will have to enter your email addy to access the download): http://www.butterick.com/freeproject/index.html
Partners are posted! Beacause of the odd-number I decided to keep the swap even by counting myself twice since the round-robin can be confusing. Please email your partners for mailing info. The deadline is May 1. If you or your partner have concerns about the deadline, also please email each other to work it out. Have fun!

Posted - Apr 27 2009 : 8:28:40 PM You are welcome, Tammy. I am glad you liked the bag. And I guess you've let the Potato out of the Bag - tee hee.
Since several have asked, here are the directions for making a microwave potato bag. It is a very easy thing to make. I hope you can understand these directions. NOTE: I used my serger for all seams.
Cut 2 pieces of 100% cotton fabric 10" x 22". Cut 1 piece of 100% cotton batting 10" x 22" (I use warm and natural). Place fabric pieces right sides together and place batting on top. Pin one short 10" side together and sew a 1/2" seam. Pin the other 10" side together and sew a 1/2" seam. Turn right side out and press along seams. Place on table with the outside of the bag facing up. Take short ends and fold to the center, overlapping one over the other by 2". Pin overlapped areas in place (to hold in place) and sew long sides together. Turn right side out and it is ready to use.
When I give as a gift or sell, I put a copy of these directions inside the bag:
Microwave Baked Potato Bag
Wash Potato Wrap in paper towel Place in Microwave Potato Bag DO NOT PUNCTURE POTATO!
Place potato bag in microwave oven. One potato - about 5-7 minutes; two potatoes - about 11-13 minutes. Times may vary depending on microwave ovens, so start with shorter time and increase as necessary for your oven.
I hope you enjoy this pattern. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them.

Posted - Apr 25 2009 : 05:03:19 AM Merry, I am sure I will...you should have your in the mail today or Monday at latest.
Toni, I have made several bags & have used cotton lawn, gingham, thrifted cotton print shirts, and even a silky kimono print. All work well. The only fabrics I think would *not* work well are stiff ones with no drape, i.e., heavy drapery/upholstery, canvas, denim, or burlap.
Ladies, please post photos when yor bags arrive!
