I made a bag from this tutorial http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=2684.0

It turned out great. You could just leave off the top flap.

Hey, tami, do you have any patterns that don't have the big flap, or that can easily be modified?
farmmommy Posted - Mar 19 2009 : 06:38:04 AM
Tami, I checked that site, and couldn't find what I'm looking for....I'm wanting one that is just an open top , in other words, I don't want one that has the big bulky flap that you throw over the opening. I have found a couple that I really like, especially one Amy Butler and one by Monica Pool, and one by Whimsicals...but geeze, who wants to pay those prices, and shipping? That's my prob....I'm cheap...lol Modifying a strap for one won't be a prob, but the bag itself needs to be big enough, but not too huge, and preferably easy, nothing too time consuming...lol....ahhhhh, the search continues...lol

Check this website out, it has a free pattern. If you are looking for something else let me know as I have others I could copy and send you. I love making bags...you can never have too many bags. There is also a really small messanger bag on this same website. Let me know what you think. http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/projects-ideas/bags-pillows/messenger-bag_1.html

Amy Butler has one and Wired Up Designs has one too, although it is designed as a diaper bag you could just eliminate the changing pad and loop. I made it last year, came out pretty good

A messenger style bag is one that the strap in long enough to go over your head.
Most are just one pocket with either a good size "flap" to keep it closed or just a zipper.
Think of the old newpaper delivery boys. Both hands are free to grab and toss the paper.
These days the bag can be any size.
