I just bought a quilt top through E-bay and it has a couple of spots. It doesn't look like blood, but it is definately noticeable. Should I wash the top first and try to get the stains out or go ahead and put it together and when I am done quilting try to get the stains out?? I am afraid it will stretch during the washing process, but geez I hate to quilt the thing and then find out I can't get the spots out!
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Karin...what an awesome idea! If all else fails I will definately keep that in mind.
I plan on posting a photo of my "spotted" quilt soon. I'll take a close up of what I am contending with. Uggh....I can never understand after someone puts so much effort into a quilt top that they would'nt store it so it wouldn't get stained....or at least get rid of the spots before any time elapses. This is definately a vintage top. It's very sweet. Someone has appliqued in all of the squares a different colored little house, some are plaid! And, it is bordered in blue and white checks. I was very excited about my winning bid. I just hope I can get it clean! Thanks again for the advice! |

Lemon juice and sunshine is a great remedy sometimes, and spot treating with fels naptha works sometimes too. Definitely don't wash the whole quilt before quilting.
I've been thinking about you Melody, ever since I read your post about needing a quilt top. And you know the final thing to do (in my demented opinion) is you can always applique a little something over the spot. A lot of my old quilts have a leaf or a flower, or a bug appliqued over some spot that just will not cooperate!

If the spots are on white fabric, lemon juice and sunshine (if you can find any this time of year ) should get rid of the spots.

Go to a quilt shop and get special cleaner and just spot treat don't wash the whole thing. Don't put in dryer. Might not have been prewashed and it will distort shape for sure and may come apart as in quilting we do not backstitch. Good luck hope you get the nasty out. Is it old? Show us a picture. |
