Wash it in hot water, put it in the dryer then start cutting? Is that it? Most sewing would be by hand? or will the machine take that thickness?

It would be nice if you could stop over and help me, but this info has been good. I was wondering about cutting it, if it would ravel, Good to know it won't.

nancy jo, i will just jump in here with some advice cause i love working with pulled felted wool.
this is what i understand and i'm sticking to it.
the wool that is felted with felting tools is "felted", the wool that is "felted" by washing it in 2 different temps so that it shrinks is called pulled felted wool.
to really felt it with the washing machine, i wash it on hot and rinse in cool or cold water. it is the difference in temp and the agitation that causes it to be felted. at that point it can be used to make just about anything cause you can cut it like any type fabric and it wont unravel. so you can look at any type pattern to work with felted wool, and your bonnybunny is made from felted wool. i have started making garment with felted wool and it is fun. i think i have read a lot of post here from other farmgirls that like to work with felted wool. good luck, nancy jo, and enjoy.

I haven't done anything with felting wool yet. I get wool sweaters from the thrift and unravel them for the yarn. I'm not sure what to make with felted wool.

I am such a fool for fabric in all its permutations. I seldom find wool sweaters at local thrift stores, most of us are wearing them I think. Wool is such great stuff. I got a few wonderful old wool blankets last year. The yellow, think egg yolk, is on my bed. I got two pink ones, one for my friend Beth who has a summer place on an island and lots of visiting grandkids, family ,etc. I'm sure you'll find something good Nancy Jo...

I have never moved anything on my sewing machine either, just sewed it. It worked fine for me too. and the sweaters that don't felt the first time must be a blend. Look at the labels and make sure it is 100% wool. Mine always felt the first time and never have had to do them more than once. Then again I have a sanitary cycle on my washing machine that heats the water up to I believe 180 degrees so it is really hot. but usually it is the adjitation that helps to felt it also. Hope this helps.

i just keep my machine the same, nothing special, just go slow. i am sure some would disagree with me, but that is what i have done for years

Do you need to put the feed dogs down on your machine to sew the felted wool? Do you need a special needle? I have a sweater that I want to use for a tea cozy but I'm not sure how to run it through the machine. I guess the tension will have to be really low, too?

Yes, I have had wool sweaters felt nicely, and others that needed to be done several times. I just felted 2 on Saturday night, and made a faery costume for my baby. You can see it on my blog...

Just a hint for machine sewing...pin your wool between two pieces of tissue paper. It helps it to feed evenly and won't catch.

I have washed and dried wool sweaters and they still haven't felted completely so sometimes you have to do it more than once. And then I've had wool sweaters that wouldn't even shrink at all!

Hey Jessie, I'm doing good.  We need to do a virtual lunch one day and catch up! Start hitting those thrift stores now and collecting wool sweaters...once you start you'll be amazed at all the ideas that will pop into your head.

What are making Nancy Jo? Are you felting? If you get a wool sweater wash it with soap in hot hot hot water maybe 3 times depending how much it has already shrunk. Throw it in the dryer for good measure. I just went to a felting class. While it's still in my brain I know something. but I will forget fast...
