I wasn't sure where to post this picture...my greatgrandma made the body for this metal head doll that was my grandpa's when he was a baby. He gave it to me when I was in my 20's and it has been my favorite thing ever since. I love that the face is "loved off" and that it was obviously used and loved. My grandpa (who we all called Pappy..he passed on in 1994) thought I would want to fix it and paint it up and make new clothes and all...WRONG!! I love the little guy just the way he is!

Oh Frannie, I have made plenty of dollies before (with 3 daughters)..it was just unexpectedly coming upon that full basket of face-less head heavy bodies that made me think of all those alien movies and made me laugh. I am not impuning your dear dollies, honest!
Haven't made any dolls for a good while now, though...daughters are aged 28 to 22, but I hope mine DOES NOT look like E.T. after I've finished..LOL.... I was more hoping for Pippi Longstocking!!! |

i have an olde dolly that i swear ... looks like she just returned from the grave. Her little face is one that only a momma could love! But she just enchanted me when i found her. She's packed away right now .. when i discover her again .. i will share her picture. I call her Baby Girl LaFever ... after a story from a friend who discovered a tiny grave on the property she bought in New Hampshire. She had NO idea the grave was there ... and ... such an unusual name "LaFever" .. even more strange because HER last name was LaFever!!!! She said she would hear a small child calling: Ma-ma .. Ma-ma from time to time. Her own little daughter almost died from contaminated water from a well near the grave (actually, a rabbit had fallen in and died) .. AND another interesting note is that the dead rabbit in the well was discovered by TASHA TUDOR's nephew, who was a neighbor. When Christine told a group of us girls this story .. there was not a dry eye among us! (This was in Oregon where she had since moved) .. and i found it in my soul to find a dolly in honor of Baby Girl LaFever on that trip .. AND .. i did .. AND i also found a most wonderful picture of a small grave at the same time .. that hangs on our guest bedroom wall .. will take a pic of it and post it too!
oh and miz diane .. jus' wait t'il you make a little E.T. dolly .. it is sooooooo amazing how a face and hair brings a baby alive! (gonna' draw up that dolly pattern reeeeeel soooooon. xoxo

yOU GUYS CRACK ME UP....twilight zone. My hubby saw it and said "what IS that"...and I thought Frannie's basket of Alien beings was scary...
Jenny, wish I had a doll or any thing for that matter that belonged to my granpa.You are so lucky to have it, no wonder you treasure it. I had never heard of Minerva tin head dolls so I've learned something too. Happy New Year! |

I know what it's like to be creaped out by a doll. My Mom started collecting dolls for me as a little girl. One day she was so happy to find an original Knuckle Head (Charlie McCarthy ventriliquist(sp?)doll). I was horrified by that doll. He had to go!!! He reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode. I was certain he was gonna kill me in my sleep! Happy to hear your husband is well adjusted! Lu

wow...that is so cool. I think it is a Minerva doll head. It seems like Pappy MAY have told me that HIS grandma made it for his dad and it was passed down..can't remember exactly..just know it was his too. He was born in 1913. That is so cool..I said that already didn't I..Did you notice mine has twine around the neck to hold the head together? When my husband and I first married he thought it was a scary looking doll. I had to educate him..started crying and explained how much the little guy (I think of it as a boy doll..but it is probably a girl..named Minerva..right????) meant to me. He has accepted him now.

Hey Jenny, Are we twins separated at birth?? First our passion for our critters, now this doll. I have one like him/her. I think they are both called Minerva tin head dolls. I have all of my old dolls packed away in trunks cause the pups think they are toys for them to chew on. The horrors!! I'm gonna find my tin head and see if it's a twin to yours. I'm pretty sure she is. So glad you kept yours with the original condition and love from your Pappy. Soooo special! Lu
