Posted - Jan 01 2009 : 09:08:02 AM For my 18 yo daughter, who is anxious to learn (and so I can reclaim my sewing machine, hee hee). What should I look for? Avoid? Buy online or local? Refurbished or new?
ANything else you can share would be appreciated. ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)

Posted - Jan 01 2009 : 4:13:50 PM I have a feeling I'll be using the serger and my daughter can use my sewing machine. I'm a beginner too, though, as far as serging. This oughtta be interesting.

Posted - Jan 01 2009 : 4:02:51 PM Sergers are a little challenging to thread but the new ones are pretty easy - just a lot of steps. My friend that owns the shop where Mom bought ours helped me out with it. I think the older ones were a lot worse Amy Grace

Posted - Jan 01 2009 : 4:01:17 PM Um, is threading something I need to be particularly aware of? Are they that hard to thread?!?!? How does one know if it's easy or not?
ETA: What about this one? Is this junk or a good deal? http://www.sewvacdirect.com/white1634-ultracombo.html

Posted - Jan 01 2009 : 12:20:38 PM I am using the basic Singer model right now - I think it costs under $300. Super easy to use and not too intimidating to thread. My mom actually bought it for us to share - she had a Husqvarna that she could not thread (it was about 15-20 years old) We bought it at a local shop that offers servicing Amy Grace
