For my 18 yo daughter, who is anxious to learn (and so I can reclaim my sewing machine, hee hee).
What should I look for? Avoid?
Buy online or local?
Refurbished or new?
ANything else you can share would be appreciated.

I have a feeling I'll be using the serger and my daughter can use my sewing machine. I'm a beginner too, though, as far as serging. This oughtta be interesting.

Sergers are a little challenging to thread but the new ones are pretty easy - just a lot of steps. My friend that owns the shop where Mom bought ours helped me out with it. I think the older ones were a lot worse

Um, is threading something I need to be particularly aware of? Are they that hard to thread?!?!? How does one know if it's easy or not?

I am using the basic Singer model right now - I think it costs under $300. Super easy to use and not too intimidating to thread. My mom actually bought it for us to share - she had a Husqvarna that she could not thread (it was about 15-20 years old)
We bought it at a local shop that offers servicing

this is the one I got a few years ago and have serged the crap out of it with not
a single trouble. Basic, affordable. At the time it was sold through Nancy's Notions.
Singer has a similar model.
