Take a large disposable container such as a milk or juice container. Make sure it is clean then add tap water a third of the way up the jug. Add several drops of food coloring in your choice of Christmas color. Freeze until solid. Once frozen take a second disposable clean container and put unpopped corn or uncooked rice in it to use as a weight. Sit the popcorn or rice filled container inside the first frozen container so that it sits on the ice. Center as much as possible. Fill the first container the rest of the way with tap water. Add more food coloring. Freeze until solid. Remove the inside weighted container. Remove the outside container so that you are left with a block of ice with an open area in the middle. You can now place a tea candle inside and light it for a beautiful glowing block of colored Christmas ice. Several of these grouped together outside look stunning. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

We do something similar on cold winter days--making ice bowls overnight for our cereal the next morning. We nest a cereal bowl inside a larger outer container, hold the cereal bowl down with tape, and fill the space with water. In the morning, remove the bowls and eat your cold cereal in it. It's SOOOOOOOO much fun! I posted about it last winter under the parenting and kids section. We love it, easy to do, makes the frigid weather more fun! |
