Oh girls, you'll never guess what my wonderful hubby got me for my birthday! A new sewing machine! It's just great, it doesn't have all sorts of bells and whistles, so its not confusing or intimidating. In case you hadn't noticed, I'm relatively new to sewing with a machine , but very willing to learn. I've just been playing with it and having a ball! Now I can't wait til the charm swap I'm in ends at the end of the month!

Take care, Melissa.

Thanks Audrey for the "Insul Bright" name. I couldn't remember it and I couldn't remember "mylar" either. Thanks so much.

Yippee!!! Reminds you of being a kid and getting a new toy! I hope you and your machine have a wonderful time getting to know each other.

For hot pads, there's a product called Insul-Bright which is a layer of batting and a thin layer of mylar. Similar to the stuff used for curtains but not as thick. It's main uses are hot pads and such. I've used it a couple of times and it's just like using regular batting. Haven't burnt myself so it must be working! Nancysnotions.com has it if you want to just check it out before you buy. I'm pretty sure JoAnn's carries it too. Check in the batting area.

Enjoy your new toy!

Congratulations!! I have an oldie that needs replacing too. I think it is over 30 years old. The tension doesn't work anymore and vital parts are missing too. But it did a LOT of good w work for both mom and I. So it deserves his rest, lol.

I might go and see today, hhhmmm :)

Thank you girls, I am having a great time playing with my new toy. In fact I've been having so much fun with it I haven't finished the baking for the baskets to be passed out tomorrow, and I still have all my wrapping yet to do :( So unfortunately I have to put myself in time out til everything is caught up. I better get cracking, time is running out!

Take care, Melissa.

Melissa, about the batting with the foil barrier. I can honestly say I've never seen it used on curtains because it is thick. I wonder if it can be shaved down? The only thing I've seen it used on is Roman shades. Had them in my house when I moved in. Blackout shades was what they were. When you put them down the room was dark. Great for sleeping and did keep the cold out. Of course, you might be able to find some drapery lining that is foam backed, I don't know.

Diana-It's a Brother. It's the only one I haven't been scared to mess with. When my mom passed away I got her sewing machine, but I could never ever get the tension right on it. One of my wonderful friends that I work with gave me one, but its definately not for beginners. When you press on the petal there is no easing into it, it just runs flat out...very scary!!! :)

Take care, Melissa.

Melissa-Congrats to you on your new sewing machine! What brand did you get? I'm hoping Santa brings me one since mine died recently.

I will have to check at Joanns to see what they have that'll work good.
Madelynn-I'm working on a little patchwork...center piece I guess you would call it. Its for on the table to set my candle on. I'm making it in purples and greens. It just amazes me how much smaller it is once you have it sewn together. When I was cutting out the pieces I wasn't thinking about the 1/4 inch seem allowance. Oh well! chalk it up to a rookie mistake. :) It still looks pretty I think. I'm sure your son will love the fleece pants, they sound wonderfully warm. After I get better at sewing I was considering making some pajama/lounge pants for me, but I think thats a ways down the road til I get that good.
Betty-Does that batting work like insulated curtains do? I need to make new curtains for the living room, but they have to be insulated so our heat doesn't escape.

Take care, Melissa.

There is also a batting that has a reflective layer in it that is like aluminum and keeps heat from passing through roman shades. It can be used for hot pads also.

You can use a quilters batting that is made from wool. Ask at your fabric store and they will know too. Have fun. I made my younger sister a table runner and place mats for Christmas. I also made my son for his birthday this month a pair of pants made out of fleece for his off days. There are a million things you can sew that are really easy to start with. Have fun.

I have been having so much fun with it. I got up real early this morning to get a drink and wanted to stay up and play, but I was a good girl and went back to bed til 7am...then I got up and played!! Have any of you girls ever made hot pads? What can I use that will keep your hand from getting burnt? I only cook with cast iron, so I need something that stands up to alot of heat. Would an old bath towel be enough?

Take care, Melissa.

Melissa, you are going to have years of wonderful fun with your new sewing machine. I got my Viking just over two years ago and now want to upgrade to an embroidery machine. I've been sewing for 52 years or so now and I think I deserve it. Might also help me make some extra $$$ for my household. It's just me and Penny the Pooch, but we would like some extras occasionally.

Enjoy sewing. It has brought me untold hours of enjoyment. BTW, have a happy birthday.
