OK. its not hard, but I just learned like a few mins ago, I watched the Alyssa girl give the tutorial on youtube, and I totally got it, but I started out with 20 stitches on my chain stitch and now I am down to about 12 stitches! My scarf is getting narrower and narrower. What am I doing wrong?

OK I think I got it. I was loosing a stitch at the end of each so after 4 rows, I lost 4 stitches. I guess that would be ok if I were making a christmas tree ;). I'm still working on it as I have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do at the store, but sit here and pray people will start shopping.

Guess what, you're not the only one, lol. Indeed the chain 1 at the beginning is important, as everybody here told ya already :)

And after ALL those years of crocheting (and knitting too) I still count EVERY stitch I crochet/knit. I have been doing this since I was a little girl and now I am a big girl and still do it, lol
I try NOT to count every single stitch as I go, but just can't, HAVE to count one two three, etc. YIKES

My "ripping out" crocheting friend calls it "frogging"... because you "rip it" "rip it" . lol

I did the same thing on my first crochet project - I was forgetting to chain one at the end of the row. Make sure you do that! And yes, count your stitches at the end of every row. After you've done it for a while, you'll be able to do this in your sleep. It does take a bit of practice - be patient with yourself. Hang in there! And yes, ripping out happens. We call it un-stitching in my house - it has a bit of a nicer ring to it.

Cristine,
Dont feel bad, girl! My first project was just a square for an afghan...only the square. by the time I got done it looked like abstract art. I have 50 stitches on one side and it came to a point on the other. :O) Don't forget that Chain on at the end....its what holds it all together. :) I am sure you are going to do wonderfully at it.

Ditto what Betty said. That's the most common crocheting error~forgetting to add those chains at the end of each row.

It sounds as though when you turn to make the next row you are not chaining one for single crochet, three for double crochet, etc.

try when you turn to go across a new roll
go in the stitch closet to the end
add one and then go across ; count it as you
Maybe place a marker at the end and the beginning
It sounds like you are skipping stitches some wheres
When I first learned to crochet I had a problem turning the work and the ends where crocked and I loss stitches too.
Gran would make me undo some roles and try, try again.

i've been counting. I started with twenty, and two rows later I'm down to 17, and there's no room for another stich :( Taking it apart for the 4th time .....

Try counting the stitches at the end of each row before you go on. If they aren't correct take it apart and try it again. You have to look carefully that you aren't missing any stitches.
Hope this helps. A good book with pictures showing you the stitches will help. You might even find some pictures online.
