My friend, who is teaching me to quilt, and I will be finishing my first quilt over the Holiday. Last time I was at Joann's I couldn't believe the cost of batting. Since I'm in this use it up mode I was wondering if I could use an old blanket for the batting. It's cotton/poly and a tight flat weave.
What do the quilters think?
Oh this is a snuggling quilt made out of flannel for DD, so it will get used. |

For all the time and expense that you have put into the quilt top I would spend the money on batting. The only kind I use is Warm & Natural cotton batting. Joann's has it on sale by the yard at 50% off from time to time or use the 40% off coupon from the mailer. You can get up to a 5 yard cut for 40% off.

Thanks All. You've given me a lot to think about. I had thought the blanket would make the quilt warmer too. I have a few that my g'ma made and they are perfect for summer, but not warm enough in winter. Maybe my friend has some good sources for less expensive batting. |

my mother in law mae quilts for many years. because of her being on more than a strict budget she usually used a blanket for the batting. they turned out beautiful! if you are machine quilting it works just fine! in fact it think it works easier becuase the blanket wont pull out of shape the way batting can. peace connie in alaska |

You know I use cotton ployster.
I hand quilt full size quilts
I find that the warm and natural while it is a good choice
is hard to hand quilt.
But,
If you are going to machine quilt it is a good choice.
The more you quilt it the more old fashioned it will look pinkroses

I think you will find it hard going trying to quilt with a blanket in between, this from the voice of experience. I like cotton and Hobbs 80% cotton qand 20%surprise battings, they are so easy to work with. It took me a long time to realize if I am going to put all this work into something I should use good materials. Sometimes Hancock's of Paducah will have battings on sale, especially if you get a bunch. I quilted with wool batting once and it is like butter, as Sunshine says. It is absolutely amazing....Good luck.

After the work you have put into your quilt top, you will always be glad you invested in a good batting. I use cotton.

It seems to work better tying a quilt made with a blanket than it does quilting it.

you can but it may not work like you want I have done that before and it was a royal pain to quilt through. wool quilts like butter, cotton second best and polyester I will never ever use again it pearls and bleads and beads through the fabrics. and doesn't quilt well and is uncomfortable to sleep under.
