Posted - Nov 28 2008 : 06:56:21 AM hi all!
I've just gotten into crocheting and I have a simple afghan I'd like to try. But it calls for like 12 skeins of yarn...wow, this can get pricy, especially making a gift. Does anyone know of any discount "cheap" places online to buy yarn?
Thanks!! Sheri

Posted - Nov 29 2008 : 10:49:04 AM When I ordered from Smileys, the min. was $25. Christ! they've upped that quickly for sure! Although they do charge a reasonable flat rate on the shipping no matter how much you order.( I've dropped $50 easy at Hobby Lobby buying sale yarn) One way to make it more equitable is to go in on an order with a local friend(s) or neighbor(s) that knits or crochets~that's what I did. However you do it, have a blast! ;)

Posted - Nov 29 2008 : 08:56:48 AM Knit Picks would be good site online but I agree on the WalMart yarn. Online shopping always requires shipping and that adds so much to the costs normally unless you buy a minimum amount. Jami in WA

Posted - Nov 29 2008 : 05:32:42 AM Have you thought about asking for a barter? There may be some stashaholics who have what you are looking for. Also freecycle (if you have that where you are).
I agree also on WalMart. Watch the sales ads for the craft stores near you - I know JoAnn's was having a sale on Red Heart Super Saver this weekend for $1.97/skein. I checked out smileys, but they have a $50 minimum order and you'll have shipping costs as well. Their prices are amazing, but you have to buy a lot of yarn to make $50. I checked out elann as well. She has some really amazing stuff, but if you are just looking for plain old acrylic, she only has the fancier stuff. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for.
Hope this is helpful.

Posted - Nov 28 2008 : 09:02:23 AM If you don't want to go the online route, you can get Red Heart yarn really cheap at WalMart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. You can also find good deals on EBay for yarn.
