Posted - Nov 30 2008 : 5:02:29 PM you can still buy them ( the tools that is as stores) it just doesn't look like a U any more it is usually two metal rods with a piece of plastic that fits at either or both ends depending on the company that makes it. I still do both of those types of lace tutorial on hairpin crochet that shows the fork I am talking about http://www.sykospark.net/hairpin/

Posted - Nov 30 2008 : 4:22:43 PM Thank you, Sunshine. I realized when you posted that that you were absolutely right....I wonder if anyone does that kind of crocheting any more. It has been a long time since AI've seen one of the hairpin lace devices in any craft or knitting store.

Posted - Nov 30 2008 : 12:11:24 AM I remember my aunt made an afghan using broomstick crochet, but she had a tool made for it, it was like two knitting needles with a loop at the top so it made a big upside down U and she showed me how to use it. Can't remember if I made anything to speak of....but it is a very useful device.

Posted - Nov 27 2008 : 12:55:55 PM OOh yes, I love this stitch. I had a wicked time learning it, but once I found that the key was to make sure that everything was held tightly then it was no problem. It makes the most beauitufl shawls and such. :) HUGS

Posted - Nov 27 2008 : 08:18:35 AM I just looked at that Bonne's link and liked it the best. I also never thought of using a ruler instead of a broomstick or knit needle...I think I'll try that! the link from there to increase and decrease is what I'll study next.. nice easy crochet patterns....but looking so much different. I think you'll enjoy this Lisa!!

Posted - Nov 27 2008 : 02:41:34 AM I actually have a big fat knitting needle :) I will have to give this a try. I was getting really bored with regular crochet . I needed some new inspiration .When I cleaned the craft room a few weeks ago I rounded up a basket of leftover yarn pieces . I just keep pushing basket out of my way. Now maybe I will use them with this broomstick lace stitch. Kristin, your granny using a broom handle is cool . There are quite a few of us broom riding farmgals here :)

Posted - Nov 27 2008 : 02:00:49 AM I learned it a long time ago and it's simple enough that I made a winter scarf with that pattern lately. It is just a broomstick like a knitting needle ONLY use ONE(now ya buy ONE big fat knitting needle for this) It really is easy and makes a nice lace...almost hard to tell it is crochet. Give it a try and enjoy! I do! I remembered it after several years, so it must be simple...lol ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)

Posted - Nov 26 2008 : 6:37:05 PM Lisa, I made an afghan for my mom many years ago using this technique. It was easy to do. It looked pretty and lacy but was also surprisingly warm.
Let me know if you decide to try it. I'd love to see what you make with it.

Posted - Nov 26 2008 : 6:17:00 PM So happy you posted this. My grandmother who is no longer with us crocheted us each beautiful afghans and she used a sawed off broom handle. I always wondered if anyone still knew how to do this. Maybe I will have to try one. When she used to work on them it didn't look too hard. She shared many of her skills with me but this wasn't one of them probably because as a teenager I wouldn't have wanted to carry around a broom handle with my project. Now I ride on one:) By the way Lisa I love your signature.
