**Called every store around here that carries that brand of yarn - none of them had the delft blue, so then I went to the website, and I finally found it there**

Did anyone besides me see this in the Sept/Oct issue of Crochet Today?
http://www.crochettoday.com
(click on the picture of the Special Olympics)

To sum it up, the Special Olympics is looking to give a handmade scarf to each athlete and their whole entourage. That means the number they are looking to reach this year is 5000! There are any number of free scarf patterns online, and it looks like they are made from Super Saver Yarn, Delft Blue (#885) and Soft White (#316). The only rules are that the scarves be made from those exact colors, and that they are in the hands of the Special Olympics people in Idaho by January 15, 2009.

Now, I know I've been craft-fasting, but I think I may have to break down and buy me some yarn (unless someone has some they'd like to barter). DS has been bugging me to teach him how to use my knifty knitter, so may have to do it with this project. Not only teach a skill, but generosity and compassion as well.

Anyway, thought this was too good not to pass on. Hope we can help them!

I have managed to stay busy during this short break between semesters and Thursday when I go in to pick up my books for this next semester I will be able to drive by and drop off 10 scarves for the Special Olympics. Thank you, Ann, for this post. I would have never known otherwise!

Here's a pic of what I have been able to finish:

Deadline is fast approaching!

Just checked their website this morning:
"This year, the Scarf Project is already back in action for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games! With the national outreach received from Scarf Project sponsor Coats and Clark, the World Winter Games has already surpassed its goal of 5,000 scarves, receiving over 14,000 scarves over the last few months. If you have not mailed in your scarf, there is still time to do so. The World Winter Games will be accepting scarves until the 15 January 2009 deadline."

I think all boys should be taught to either knit or crochet or both. It keeps their minds occupied with something productive and it's time they are not spending playing video games. We have a rule in our house - being a boy/girl is no excuse for not learning something. There are no "girl" activities or "boy" activities - only activities. If you want to try, then let's do it.

Oh man that is too bad. The pictures are great. I am so proud of him for working so hard on it. I asked my hubby if he knew how to crochet. He said his mom taught him when he was little. I think it is great.

We had new knitter tragedy in my house this week - yes, sad but true. When DS went to work on row 3, not only did he lose a bunch of stitches, but somehow managed to tie the ones he did in some kind of new boy scout knot. After tearing it all out, yes, I almost cried, he has decided he is going to wait to try again. So, it looks like I'll be doing his scarves. BUT hey, at least he tried, and I'm sure when he's ready to try again, I know I'll get another, "well that's not so hard."

Yes, DS is knitting with needles! He knocked out 2 more rows last night, and after a good morning of sledding today, he'll probably knock out a few more. I'm pretty sure I'll have to help him finish, but look at the joy (and pride) on his face!

"Gee Mom - this isn't so hard!"

Hope this brightens your day!

Well, I got one done! It only took about four hours. I am going to get as many as I can. Walmart carries the yarn colors needed.

I agree with Monica and Tammy - crafting for a good cause doesn't break the fast. (1) It isn't for personal "gain"; (2) it's coming and, more importantly, going out of your house in a short period of time; and (3) there is a timeline associated with it.

To me it's the oxen-in-a-ditch analogy from the Bible: even on the Sabbath, it was permissible to rescue an oxen that had fallen in a ditch rather than let it suffer even though it was technically considered work. So I'm gonna get my own oxen out of the ditch - putting yarn on my shopping list now.

Thanks so much for sharing this, Ann. What a good cause.

God bless -

...and for all you knitters out there, there's a knitted version, too! Here's a link to the pattern: http://www.coatsandclark.com/NR/rdonlyres/3BA95630-AF0F-4D5A-9385-B95B4749AECA/83697/WR1704.pdf . and it really IS a great cause. Thanks for the heads'up!

Ann,

Thanks for letting me know about this. I'll pass this along to my knitting and crocheting buddies. I also just want to tell you gals that the Special Olympics is a fantastic organization. I have a cousin who has Down Syndrome. When Robyn was in her late teens and twenties, she participated in the summer Special Olynpics in swimming. She won many medals and I got to be her hugger. We give to this organization 4 times a year-for each of their olympic campaigns. My niece (4) also has Down's and my sister is already checking into the Special Olympics for her. I'm so making a scarf or two for this great cause. Thanks again Ann. By-the-by, I haven't forgotten that you need eyelet and hopefully a package will get out to you in the mail this weekend.

Be well,
Bonnie

Hey! My nephew particpates in the Special Olympics. May I prevail on one of y'all to knit a scarf for me? I would be happy to purchase the yarn and pay the scarf's postage to its destination.

Thanks for the consideration. However, the knitting is a from-the-heart project on your part, and if my request is asking too much, my feelings are not hurt should no one respond.

Knit away!
