I taught myself to crochet using a book called The Complete Idiots guide to Knitting and Crocheting. It has a lot of ideas in it. Now if I could only get the hang of knitting. So far even with this book I just can't seem to pick it up. |

Okay ladies, you must promise not to laugh at this, and no crossing your fingers behind your back when you make this promise.... Promise?
Okay! My daughter and I found an awesome way to learn to both knit and crochet. We visit our library quite often and when we were in the childrens section searching for more American Girl books to feed her reading appetite, I came across the Kids Can Press books, the author's last name is Sadler. They have one for both knitting and crocheting that is sooooo very easy to learn from. The pics are in full color and up close shots of each step. There is also a book titled Way to Crochet that shows how to crochet plastic bags (a good recycle project). My 9 year old taught herself to crochet using these books and I taught myself to knit using the knitting version. They are that simple. For my brain to understand something, it has to be. No giggling here. :) My mil tried to teach me to crochet and I couldn't learn from her. She made the remark that since I was left handed, I would never learn to crochet. Well, that was her first mistake telling me I would NEVER learn. Hmpf!!! Not only did I learn to crochet, but I also learned to knit. One day I showed her what I had been up to and she was amazed!! I never told her exactly how I learned though. My secret right?
Moral of my story is this: Believe in yourself and have a I can do this attitude. Never let somebody tell you that you can't do something. :)

Hi Deb,
You will feel find the things that you are more comfortable with than others. Some people pick it up right away others it takes a while to get the different stitches and how to change colors and such. Have fun and I am sure you will be happily crocheting soon. I am mailing out your book today. :)

Deb, I just looked at the site. Lovely but to be honest I think for a real beginner it is a bit OTT!!
My opinion ofcourse, if you feel up to it I would say go for one of the free patterns, try the easiest looking and then go try the others till you got it .
Whatever you decide, just enjoy the crocheting experience :)

I taught myself to crochet 37 yrs ago from an article in a Good Housekeeping mag, been at it ever since, I find it so relaxing. I think I even still have that article around here somewhere, very yellowed, I'm sure! |

I too LOVE to crochet. Was taught to do it when I was a little girl in school and since then?? I keep doing it. Tried to teach my mom but she couldn't get it. She could knit like a PRO but crochet? Never did she really learn it.

I'm excited. My 10 yo dd learned how to knit at Girl Scout camp this summer - she wants to learn how to crochet as well. We'll learn together!

Good luck, Deb! I learned to crochet when I was 10, and I can tell you some of my happiest hours have been spent with a hook in my hand. This is a great skill to have - you will always be able to make memorable gifts for every occasion that will be treasured heirlooms.

Another super book and terribly inexpensive is called I Taught Myself To Crochet. Walmart has it and it comes with 5 or 6 different hooks to get you started. My grandmother taught my sister and I how to crochet using this book. Hope it helps!

MaryJane's got you covered!! I downloaded this booklet and printed it off for me niece who is now crocheting up a storm!! I laminated the pages and punched a hole in the top and hooked them together with a key ring.
