Posted - Oct 26 2008 : 3:43:27 PM Please forgive me - I'm having a Mommy moment... Even though she is watching TV, my daughter is knitting a little scarf and beret for one of her Webkinz. Way to multi-task Dayton!

Posted - Oct 27 2008 : 3:56:35 PM Madelynne, try sitting in front of her to teach her - like looking in a mirror. Have not tried this myself, but have read it works. My mom was ambidextrous, and if she was still alive, I would ask her and pass the info on to you.

Posted - Oct 27 2008 : 2:21:01 PM Madelynne, You might want to try to teach her right handed! My mom taught me when I was 8 to crochet and it wasn't until 30 years later when I was going to teach a friend, who was right handed, that I realized I crochet right handed!

Posted - Oct 27 2008 : 12:17:12 PM I have been trying to teach my daughter who is 21 going on 22 all the things I do. She can kind of knit and wants to crochet. The big problem is she is a south paw and I am not. My mother was not the crafty person so I never learned how to knit or crochet from her or for that anything crafty. I have many friends that have helped me through the years. I feel that by trying to get my daughter to learn even one thing can be said as a pay back. I hope to have many years as you will to pass things down to the youth or others. keep up the good work.

Posted - Oct 27 2008 : 12:06:30 PM Ann, I couldn't agree with you more and please don't apologize! I am hoping as my girls get older that they will have an interest in learning tatting,knitting,etc... Isaiah, who is 6 1/2 is totally a little builder just like his dad and it's so cool! I refuse to ever buy video games! If they want them, they can buy them with their own money when they live in their own house not mine!!

Posted - Oct 27 2008 : 11:08:19 AM I'm so glad the younger generation is learning, too. My mom had an older cousin (who was 92 in 1992) who tatted, and not the crochet tatting either, the stuff with the shuttle. When she went legally blind at the tender age of 75, she tatted by feel. Amazing! When she passed, it went with her. My mom always said that one day she would trek into Chicago and have Anna teach her, but then she died, too. If we don't fight to keep these skills alive, no one else will, and we must. I'd rather have a generation of kids knitting, crocheting, embroidering, whatever, than the generation who is coming up and knows nothing but how to push buttons on a video game. Sorry, soapbox moment - WOW two moments for the price of one! LOL

Posted - Oct 27 2008 : 08:01:44 AM Ann, As you know I have been working on cotton to spin and Olivia loves to help me pick out the leaves and stuff as I am cleaning it and the other day she had followed me into the bathroom as I was cleaning! She picked up a piece of cotton that my hubby had left on the counter from opening cold tablets and I told her to put in the trash and she exclaimed very seriously " But mommy it's your thread" ! I have to say, I did stop and think I bet I could spin that! She keeps asking me to show her how to make yarn when she gets bigger and I guarantee you I will!
