I have had a backache for 4 days now. a few weeks ago a customer came into the fabric store and asked me if I knew what a "bed buddy" was, well no i didn't so she went on to explain what it was and how to make one. I used her idea tonight and my backache has subsided.

Bed Buddy

Fabric: a fat quarter (18" x 21") or size of your choice.
rice
Optional: dried lavender or herb of your choice

Stitch fabric wrong sides together in a rectangle, leaving a 3" opening for turning. I double stitched the seams. Turn in side right. Fill with half way with rice and a small amount of lavender. Sew opening closed.

Heat in microwave for 2 minutes and enjoy the heat. It lasts for approximately an hour. You can also put smaller ones in the freezer for a bit to chill them and use for migraines or to reduce swelling.

Hi gals -- I'm making one of these bed buddies for my dh for him to use on his aching back. Made the muslin bag; made a great leopard-print flannel cover for it. But I think I may have overfilled the inner bag with the rice and lavender -- it seems to take a long time in the microwave. I reread the instructions -- 'fill 1/2 full with rice' -- should I take it apart and take out some of the rice? Advice, please -- how full do you fill? Thanks! Katie

The ones I have are made from one washcloth stitched together in half and filled with rice and lavender. I never thought of putting a cover on them to keep them clean and have taken them apart a couple times to wash the washcloths. Think I will now make a pillow slip for my two!!HAHA

I'm glad to see a lot of you have used/made these already. I am making them to give as gifts this year. I never thought of the flannel cover for them, thank you for the suggestion, I will be making covers for everyone as well.

I've made these as well but with wheat. Warmed up they smell like bread. I'll have to try the rice/lavender mix, sounds wonderful! I also make a separate cover for my bag out of flannel and closes with velcro so I can take it off to wash it.
This is a really nice gift for a new baby. It's keeps baby warm and is safe! You can make the cover out of a baby flannel print. Or if you are really creative, you can make it into a teddy bear shape!

Call me old fashioned.

I use rice and lavender in mine -- works great. I've only made the ones that are "U" shaped that go around the neck. I'll have to try the one that is suggested here. Thanks for posting.

Something else you can use for the insides is field corn. It works wonders as well. When my husband had a tractor accident 4 years ago, he would use his corn sack over the pain pill anyday. He broke his pelvis in two places and would put one of the corn sacks on the break in the back and it was instant relief for him. I made these and sold them at craft fairs. They go over really well and they smell wonderful once they are taken out of the microwave. If you love the smell of roasted corn, you will be in heaven. The heat in them also lasts for about 2-3 hours. They are great for heating up and putting at the bottom of your bed shortly before turning in, the bed is nice and warm right where you like it the most - by your feet. I've never heard them called 'bed buddies,' but there are so many versions out there, as long as the one you have gives you comfort - use whatever works best.

I'm glad that you have found relief and that you back will be feeling better real soon. God bless you this day and always.

In His hands,
Lynda

I made few of these for my two Sister-in-laws when they were pregnant to use during labor. They loved them.

We were given one of these when my daughter had an Ilizarov apparatus on her leg for nine months (ask me how I like trampolines!).
Last year I bought a feedsack of barley and made these bags for everyone I knew for Christmas. They are absolutely great and you can make them fairly light weight if you wish so as not to put weight on a sore spot. I used a heavier muslin for the bag itself and stitched it across a couple times so the barley (or whatever you use) didn't all fall to one end. I then made covers for them so they could be washed, from assorted pretty fabrics. It never occurred to me to put herbs in them, that's a great idea.
