I'm new to quilting and excited to create a lovely civil war quilt pattern (pea ridge lilies) but I need a mentor to help me. I'm hoping to find a local quilter who wouldn't mind coming to my home (I care for my 90 year old grandma, so I need to stick close to home) for a little one-on-one piecing and quilting advice and help.
The job seems so huge that I thought this might be a good way for me to learn the skills, make a friend and finish the job - all at once. I'd be willing to pay for the advice (though not as much as I'd like, I'm sorry to say), so if anyone in the Puyallup, WA area is interested, please send me a message.

Kimberly...you don't happen to have a webcam do you? If you do and could find a mentor that has a webcam you could both set a time to "logon" and have a lesson one on one long distance! I have a webcam but I need a mentor myself..I am just starting too but I usually try somehow someway to teach myself. Good luck and let us see pictures along the way!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your good wishes and advice. My hope is to find someone who can spend a little time helping me master the piecing and quilting, hands on. Ultimately, I'd love to find some local quilters interested in having a Bee or two. But first, I need to get the basics!
By the way, Audrey: the pattern is from Barbara Backman's Quilts of the Civil War. Both it and her other work, Women of the Civil War, are fascinating - whether the reader quilts or not!

I wish I lived closer. I would love to help. Best of luck with this and let us know how you are doing! If you have any questions, feel free to ask away. Also, if you are doing it by hand, get the book 'Quilting by hand' the author is Jinny Beyer. It will answer just about any question you might have. It really is a great book.

Quilting mentors are great. There are alot of questions when you're first starting out and it's nice to know you have someone who can answer those questions for you. I hope you can find someone to fit the bill. I haven't heard of Pea Ridge Lilies but then I've had to ban myself from quilt shops this year (too many UFO'S). Can you tell me about it? Is it a kit? Or a Block of the Month? Or a block pattern? I'm always looking for new quilting ideas (probably explains the vast number of UFO's).
My quilting mentor is my sister. She got me started along this path and we've had great fun along the way. Even though she lives 500 miles away in Cody, WY we always try to find time in the year for quilting together. Several years we've taken a class together, either near her house or mine. One year we made a surprise visit to our other sister in Tuscon AZ and took in a big quilt show in town that weekend. Due to gas prices we haven't been able to do this in 2008 but I'm hoping sometime next year.

Hi Kimberly, I come to PUyallup once in awhile to visit Pacific Fabrics - you also have a great resource there in the Quilt Barn. I'm not sure about it since it moved - but when it was in the old building I took some classes there and really loved them. I'm not sure if new owners have it now or if they just decided to move. Anyway, I don't profess to be a quilting expert, but maybe we could figure out what you need together, if Quilt Barn can't help. What kind of help are you looking for?
