I grew some this year but don't know how to dry them out and prep them for birdhouses.

I think they are supposed to dry out with the seeds inside. when they sound like marakas, the gourds are dry enough. I grew some big ones too. Someone told me that they are supposed to dry out on the vine, but mine got all moldy (that is ok as long as they don't shrivel, but mine shriveled). I have had some on the porch steps for a few months and they are still like new! Don't seem to be drying out at all really. I want to make birdhouses out of them eventually.

Do I take the seeds out and then dry them or dry them and take the seeds out? Should I hang them in the garage??
I them sitting on my kitchen counter right now and they look like they did a month ago...

I just hang them up and let them dry on their own. I have them hanging here and there all over the farm.
