I had him make me one from oak and finish nails~cheaper overall and more sturdy. ;)
Just have to be careful when "lashing" the fiber on.
You can see it on my blog

Bonne, I will have to get my husband to make me one, but right now I have a plastic storage box that has open squares on the sides that the spindles fit into! I was going to get combs at the market Sunday, but I forgot! I am going to try and go get some cotton tomorrow!!

Good job Elinor, out there in Meeker!!! Post a pic whenever you get a chance.

Monica, do you have a lazy Kate for the plying? I'm driving hubby crazy with my big plans for spinning equipment for him to make. ROFL! I did get a hackle made over the weekend though.;)

Ann, I just finished the baby afghan. That was the fastest that I have ever done one (only 6 days). To keep the yarn from getting all tangled I put the 4 skeins standing up in a ice cream pail. That way they will not twist as you work.
Thanks again for this pattern.

Bonne, It figures with you!! Big yarn, big needles!!!!Right now I am try to ply 3 yarns together! Oh boy what a mess I am making!!!! I tried spinning the mohair last night and it's coming out pretty good! Not as easy as wool, but very pretty!

Beverly, that pattern sounds neat! I am going to have to try that!

I saw a really cool pattern recently that a person at our knitting guild was working on. You cast on as big or small as you want then you knit 7 rows with size 15 needles. and then the next 7 rows with a size 3 needle and go back and forth this way until you have the size you want. It makes it all bubbly it was really cute. The woman was using 2 strand of yarn, one that had a glimmer to it. It was turning out really pretty and it was very easy. Beverley

Gramax18 -I use 4 8 oz. skeins - you know the ones you can catch on sale for about $2. I know the price of acrylic yarn has gone up with the price of oil. Anyway, I usually have a little left over at the end. It would all depend on your guage, but this would at least give you an estimate. The one I just did for my friend, Molly, was all shades of purple for her new little girl. According to my son (and future gemologist), it looked like amethyst. WOW - I would have settled for pretty LOL!

Monica- yes on the needles - they are fire engine red! Can't remember the price or brand off hand, but I think I picked them up at JoAnn Fabrics. I absolutely LOVE them! It seems like every week I'd find out about another baby on the way, and being able to do the dishrag pattern on HUGE needles made the afghans go so quick. I work on them while my kids do their "independent" work for homeschool. My sister is the same as you - she loves to do socks with this teeny tiny yarn and teeny tiny needles that look like bamboo skewers! How funny that you and your sister are like me and my sister! For Christmas, I am giving her this black alpaca yarn that actually came from the alpacas on a farm my son and I visited in May. Maybe next Christmas, she'll give me a pair of black alpaca socks... Hmmmmmm...

Ann, they really make size 50 knitting needles? For me the smaller the better, but my sister loves the large ones!

Ann, thanks for the pattern. I make the dishrages with this pattern. But how much yarn does it take to make the afghan?
soapmommy60543 Posted - Sep 22 2008 : 07:37:56 AM
Good morning, Elinor! I have made many knitted baby afghans in the past year (there must have been something in the water around here - I've had 8 friends have babies in the last 14 months). My favorite pattern is actually a simple dishcloth pattern that I do with 4 strands of regular worsted weight yarn on size 50 needles. I LOVE the big needles because I can get a baby size afghan really really quickly! The pattern was given to me when I took a knitting class at our local Michael's store.

Here it is:
Cast on 4 stitches.
Row 1: Knit across.
Row 2: Knit 2, yo, knit across.
Row 3: Knit 2,yo, knit across.
Continue until you have 44 stitches (with the size 50 needles, this will be 44" when done).
Next Row: Knit 1, knit 2 tog, yo, knit 2 tog, knit across. You are now decreasing 1 stitch each row.
Next Row: Knit 1, knit 2 tog, yo, knit 2 tog, knit across.
Repeat until you have 4 stitches.
Last Row: Knit across and bind off.

The knit 2, yarn overs give a nice border with a lacy hole between the border and the body of the afghan. This is wonderful for little ones to sink their fingers into. The first one of these that I did is the favorite afghan of the little girl it was given to. By using the 4 strands of yarn, you can mix and match colors, and it works up nice and thick for cold winters. Plus, it's soft and plushy for a baby to lie on when doing tummy time on the floor.

Peace to you, and blessings to the new great grandbaby!
