If I close my eyes and picture my dad I always think of him in a suit. And always always he had a white hanky in his pocket. (Wiping the sweat or tears that 5 kids could bring him or one of our snotty noses!)
My father recently passed away, and as my mother and I went through the dreaded process of going through "things", I asked if I could have his old white hankies. She asked what I wanted to do with them but all I could say is I have no idea, but something will strike me later. I was wondering if anyone had any different ideas of things to make out of old white hankies...

::sniff sniff:: you all have so many wonderful ideas and touching stories yourselves! Maybe I can incorporate a little of all the ideas, they are great. Have to check to see how many hankies I have. (*lilwing - no babies yet but I hope to have some soon!, marriage is still new so I have to make sure I don't ring my hubbies neck first! hehe no he's really great!)

I understand your need to preserve the memories of your father. I got a shadow box and put two of my grandmother's pictures in it(1 when she was younger and one of her at an older age). I then put in a small light pink rose, her favorite rose, and I put a few of the things that reminded me of her, her white gloves that she wore to church and my wedding, a note and card that she gave me, etc. I will have it always hanging for my own personal memories...I wanted to preserve the gloves which are over 50 years old. I am sure you will find a way to preserve the hankies for the good memories of your father. A memory book of your father with pictures and the hankies folded on some of the pages....my father died when I was 26 years old and it has been 30 years and I still miss him and cherish my memories of him.

I love the pillow idea! different sized pillows are wonderful! I was going to suggest making some into sachets, but I just noticed Jenny beat me to it so instead I will agree with Jenny :D. I love to fold an especially pretty one and use it as a bookmark for my favorite book.

I was thinking about maybe a lap quilt?? Or indeed pillow cases or something like that!
I just recently found some hankies from my Omi (grandmama) and my mom, so maybe I am gonna make pillowcases with a few and use some in a to-make quilt.

Love old hankies, only i use the paper ones myself.

What a wonderful thing to have. I have one of my Grandma;s hankies..and one that she saved just for me..one of the little calendar ones with 1958...but don't have any of my Grandpa's. Pappy would pay us a penny a piece to iron his..always the big white cotton ones. I remember for Christmas one year embroidering Pappy on a few for a gift for him and he was thrilled..he used them all the time. I wonder where they ended up?
I use my grandma's hanky as a sachet in my top dresser drawer (sock drawer) and gathered it up with lavender inside and tied with a ribbon. The pillow case idea is nice!!

Amber, What a great loss for you and your family, be comforted. I can't remember ever seeing my Grandpa without a hanky, mostly he used them for wiping his eyes from laughing so hard. When he was gone I was a young girl and I used some of them as aprons for my dolls and always played a happy time just like I remember him laughing. It was every bit honoring to remember him as what he was. The girls have some good ideas for you and if you still play with dolls an apron works...Debbie

I am not sure if you have any babies, will have any babies or what, but I do know some people make them into bonnets for their children. :)

When my step dad died, we gave each family member a hanky at the funeral. It seemed quite comforting. He had lots, so we still had plenty for us to divide and keep. I buried my mother with one of them too, even though she's above him at the cemetery.

Amber - not to be too somper I will share what I did when both my father and my sons father (my husband) passed within six months of each other. The boys divided up the hanks between the three of us and every time we felt sad they had a hank on them from their loved males. The tears where wiped away and blown those sniffling noses - it was a great comfort because they viewed it as their grandpa and father was whipping away all the sadness. Now 12 years later they still have their hankies, use them and remember the love that came from those speical guys. Maybe you just want to keep them close and use them for the purpose your father used them for. I have a hanky from my husband always in my purse. Gently touches to you and I am sorry for your loss.

If you like aprons, you could always make apron pockets out of them! Are they fancy or plain?

Amber when my grandfather passed a few years ago I also requested that I receive all of the hankies. I embroidered a couple of them and use them accordingly. The others are still pressed in a little box so when the others I embroidered are a little better than worn I can make up new ones. I also have several of my great~grandmothers old ones that she had embroidered herself. Those I can't bear to use as they are way to beautiful. Instead I display them in my great~aunts old curio cabinet.

Amber, what a beautiful story. my grandpa always carried a hanky too. I found one at a thrift store recently that reminded me of him- it has a K monogrammed on it. His last name is Kaliher. It is in my pocket now.

Blessings, Debra
