I was at Walmart last week and came across a set of 4 hard plastic rings of different sizes that are used to "knit" hats. I couldn't get to the directions because they were sealed in the bag .
But the photos of the hats were adorable and I was tempted to get them but wanted to check in with all of you. Has anyone used anything like this ??

The one book I have seen with instructions that were ultra easy to understand and follow (used them for my oldest daughter since I tend to be a sort of impatient teacher..I am ashamed to admit) and she did fine..was in Stitch and [bleep]. I loved the way they explained the little details and all..made it really simple to understand.

Well,
I looked at the knitting rings again tonight, but at Michael's.
The set was $14.99 there...It was $11.99 at Walmart.
I still couldn't decide if I wanted them or not.
I havent learned to knit properly, but still want to learn.
I need a teacher who can watch over my shoulder because I can't figure it out from looking at drawings in a book
It comes easier every time I try but I always need help casting on.
I guess, ultimately, I am a purest when it comes to knitting....even though Ive only done it a few times.
I think I would be much happier using nice needles!!!
I really want to knit and then felt a bag. Ive seen too many of them that I fell in love with.

I did a whole bunch of caps with an adult size one Christmas before last and gave them to grown nephews and brother in laws and they were a hit. It IS mindless, but goes fast. I just got bored I guess with the same stitch over and over. I havn't done one in awhile though..guess I ought to..haha.
I had knitting Jenny as a kid too. I think my aunt got it for me because it had my name on it!! she is the same Aunt who taught me to knit though, and then there was no stoppin' me!!!

I bought myself a KNIFTY KNITTER just last weekend, as I am "KNITTING CHALLENGED" so I refer to it as "Knitting for Dummies".
I made one hat already, it turned out pretty nice too!
When I was a kid,I had a KNITTING JENNY which would do scarves etc.
Same concept.
Maybe the reason I never learned how to knit for real!
I took the KNIFTY KNITTER to work with me and it is nice to do something fairly mindless at lunch time.

My kids love to make baby hats with the hat loom things. I found it kinda boring..but I like to knit. I know alot of gals who love it though. I bet you could find ways to get creative with it...

Could a person do essentially the same hat using the usual method of knitting?

yes!!
sorry I forgot to mention that.
It looks like you "knit" a tube and then drawstring the hat closed at the top. They all have a rolled rim too.
