I recently got the most lovely antique loom ~ it is in gorgeous condition, a Gallinger, so it's at least 80 years old (believe they went out of business about 80 years ago?)
I have never woven before (except for very small things on tiny homemade cardboard looms and a potholder loom!) and I'm so excited about learning!
I have a couple of so-far excellent books that I'm making my way through now so I can at least have an idea of how it all works. Hope to sit down and try some hands-on learning next weekend!
Must admit, I'm a bit intimidated.. I would love to hear about some of your weaving journies, maybe get some little tips, see pictures of some things you've created! ~ And who knows, maybe someday soon I can share one too!

ooooh, ok! slowly everything is starting to make more and more sense. I'm feeling about ready to sit down and see how bad i can mess this up!
and yes, if i was to move to MO i would probably be tugging on my husband's sleeve, "but SHE has sheep, and look how great they are! purty pleeeaaase?!"
he already knows as soon as we find the right land for us, it's gonna be a funny farm! we've never talked about having sheep, but i would like a couple goats and a milk cow and chickens and and ..
i'll probably have the farm populated and planted already while he starts framing the house!
Well, off to see about this loom.. i'll post pictures as soon as i encase my entire house in a jumbled up spider web!

You tye up the treadles according to what you are going to weave. If you are weaving a plain weave of 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 then you just tye up to use those 2 treadles. Press on your treadles and see which harness move.
We have had many out of state people move in around us the last few years. They tell me that I am a bad influence on the wives...they all want sheep now! They stop by in the Spring with their kids and watch the baby lambs. Magdelina...love that name...I think I could easily influence you!

Yeah, the pictures aren't real great - when I went to pick up my loom, it was even nicer than the pictures looked. Pleasant surprises never hurt at all!
So the fact that there are only 2 moving pedals isn't what determines how many harnesses it has? It does have 4 heddles, that's why I'm confused. Does it move 2 at a time?

We're looking to buy a homestead somewhere and build our own house, and we've been considering missouri since we have so much family there - if we can ever come to a solid decision (wish I could live everywhere all at once!) maybe we'll be neighbors Ü

I can't really tell by the photos. But it is a very neat loom! If you ever want to bring it to Missouri, I will give you directions to my house. It is a very neat piece of history. Is that tape that is holding the heddles? It looks like there is 4 heddles but I can't really tell. I am so excited for you! Hey isn't this a small world. We do our shopping in Kirksville.

Wow, Kirksville is where most of that side of the family lives, and Grandpa's farm is outside of Lancaster! So so have you been having floods and crazy weather and all that jazz where you are too? My husband's cousin's husband (you'd think there was an easier way to say all these weird family realtionships!) works on a/c, heaters, and other household stuff, like pumping basements has been a big job for him this season. One night he was on call, had to pump a basement at 2 in the a.m., got rearended in his work van by someone, and while he was taking their insurance information and waiting for the police to take the report, his work van got struck by lightning! He was okay, but they said it knocked him back from the van a pretty good ways..
There are a couple pictures of my loom up on my new blog, they're not the greatest but my scanner won't work for whatever reason, so I had to put up a couple that were sent to me before I made my purchase.

We live 25 miles southwest of Kirksville and I am not sure how far Lancaster is from Kirksville. I think it is up around Unionville isn't it? i like that area too. We really enjoy this area. It has fog in the valleys some mornings and it is beautiful. People are very nice.
I don't think you will need to buy the other DVD. She sits down and goes through all the steps of warping to many different weaves. I highly recommend this DVD.
Magdelina, do you spin too? I can't wait for you to post a pic of your loom...I am a keeper of the past and getting an old loom and keeping it working is keeping the past.

wow, your loom is gorgeous, and I love the cozy nook it lives in! My husband and I are searching for a small homestead/farm right now, it sounds like you have quite the ideal spot! I see you are in NE MO - Are you anywhere near Lancaster? We have tons of family up there! Denver's (my husband's) grandpa has a farm near Lancaster that we visit at least once or twice a year.
I have found the DVD you've recommended, it looks quite informative. The website I found it on says that as a prerequisite you should know about calculating warp and weft quantities, and recommended another DVD, which they also sell "Introduction to Weaving". Do you think I would honestly need that one or do you think I could figure things out myself? I'm always wary of websites/catalogs, etc telling me I ALSO need such and such for only $29.95 more!

magdelina...I am so excited for you. To really get going, I recommend Debbie Chanler's dvd on 4 harness weaving or intro to 4 harness weaving. She also has a book too. I have found that I can go back and watch sections and she really is a good teacher. I got my Dvd from the Yarn Barn in Lawence Ks. They are very informative as well and I have also ordered weaving supplies. I have put up some pictures of my older Toika floor loom...and some of the things that we have made. Good luck and hope you can post some pictures.
