I have finally finished my first hand spun yarn! I did it in a drop spindle and it has to be the most relaxing thing in the world and it's completely addictive!

Thank You for the compliment, too. Don't you just love the beauty of fiber? I've tried many forms of art and craft and have never found anything as satisfying as fiber.

You are absolutedly right about joining a spinning guild. I belong to one here in KY called Friendship Spinners. This is a most wonderful and generous group of women and even a coupla men. Spinning can be a solitary activity but also is wonderful to share witha group. At today's meeting, I met a woman who was using a bottom spindle with a cross at the base to wind the new yarn into a ball. It was just beautiful. To top it off, at the end of the meeting she puts on a pairof black leather chaps and tells me that the reason she uses the spindle is cause she can't carry her wheel on her motorcycle! Yes, a great group!

I will try again to get pics on here.

To all the women who want to learn - check out your area for a Spinning Guild. I belong to one, and we are MORE than happy to enable, err, help others! LOL

If nothing is available, go to the library and ask about the ILL. Tell them you would like a DVD/Tape on spinning. This is FREE. Here is a website I just found with a listing:
http://www.lahottee.info/E_DVD.php

I have been lucky enough to attend workshops with Patsy Z and Judith M.M. Both are very good teachers.

Luna, I love your yarn! I have become addicted to spinning yarn! I have a top whorl spindle and I do take it everywhere just in case I have to wait then I can spin some. It's always in my purse when I go out! There are directions under welcome wagon forum( I think) that tell you how to put pictures on MJF. It took me a while to figure it out though! Thank you for the compliment!

How gorgeous your yarn is....I just love spinning and have been spending so much time on it in the last few weeks that i just saw this post today. I spin on a wheel and have never mastered the drop spindle. I've been trying to teach myself in the last few days so that I could spin away from home ocassionally. I have an old very simple bottom whorl spindle that I've been using but I've been reading about the top whorl and want to try that next. I'm going to post a picture of my yarn on my blog (since I can't seem to get pictues on here) to share. Take a look. It's from my little shetland sheep.

Stephanie, I have absolutely no clue!!!! I have not got that far yet. I guess it would be a light yarn!

Beverly, just get a drop spindle and some wool and go for it! That's what I did!!!

Monica,
I am going to go have a look at that sight. I have a feeling I might be there awhile soaking up all of the information. :) Thank you for letting me know about it. I will keep you in mind when we get back on our feet, we have no income coming in right now so we are robbing Peter to pay Paul as they say. But yes, I sure do want to learn this real bad. Thanks again.

Monica, that looks real nice. What weight is the finished yarn? I spun some on the drop spindle last year...wanted bulky pieces to use in my creations..I'll have to dig them out and take pictures. I had no one to show me how to use it other than the instructions so I'm sure I wasn't doing it the smoothest way it could have been done. But it was fun and relaxing.

Brenda, It's pretty easy to get started! I have a drop spindle and i found directions online at www.graftonfiber.com. If you go over to "spinning cotton today" which is on the 2nd page of this forum, Grace has a book called "Spin It" that she said is wonderful and my copy is on it's way in the mail. I have some top whorl hand painted drop spindles that I am selling so if you are interested e-mail me or look around etsy. There are all kinds of spindles and kits available! I just started on July 19th. There's also an etsy site called banadura that has fairly inexpensive and nice wool to start with. That is where my first yarn wool was from! Good luck and have fun!!!!

Oh!! That is beautiful!! I have been wanting to learn to do this sort of thing for the longest time. I am clueless though as to how to go about getting started. You ladies are all so very inspiring. :)

Aunt Jenny, I have already crocheted a rose, but I'm not sure what I am going to do with the rest! I must thank you and Grace profusely for all of the help. I would have been lost without both of you. I am completely addicted and I can't wait until I can get a spinning wheel someday! I even have a friend who knits and she wants me to show her how to spin yarn!

Diane I did it on a drop spindle. I found that if after you spin it, but before you wash it, you let some of the extra twist out it comes out better!

Very nice! Did you use a drop spindle or spinning wheel? My first attempts at spinning sure didn't look as nice as yours!
