Can anyone describe how to ply yarn using a top whorl spindle? I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I've had good luck searching YouTube for videos that show various spinning methods~helps immensely to actually see it being done. Good luck! ;)

Kimberly Ann, did you ever get your yarn plied! I have only done singles so far, but i think I am going to ply the yarn I am making now!

before spinning you should pull your roving apart into pencil size widths.. that helps.. I do up a bunch and roll them into little birds nests.

Thanks to you both. I'm currently struggling just to get my singles going so as soon as I master that, I'll be giving the plying a try. My roving keeps bunching up at the hook, rather than stretching into a longer single. I wonder if my roving could be too thick?

Kimberly Ann, Your top whorl for plying should be a heavier weight than what you spun your single on. I guess it isn't a necessity but it is easier. I just roll the 2 singles into balls- or I use a ball winder to make a center pull ball and ply from the center yarn and the outer yarn (the beginning and end). If you are crafty- look up how to make your own drop spindle- you can make one from a dowel, a toy wooden wheel and a cup hook- so you could make a basic heavy wooden spindle for plying. I have a heavier Bosworth spindle I use for plying unless I have done a really lightweight yarn.

It is helpful to do the andain,indian, how ever it is spelled, ball . It is when you wrap the single ply around your hand, and fingers, and then you pull your fingers out and you can pull the yarn from the center and the outside at the same time. Andean plying is what it is called. Google it and I bet you can find directions or a video. I have the Spin It book by Lee Raven.

I have one spindle, so I would have to remove the single from the spindle first, I guess.

I would have to ask you do you have more than one spindle or have you taken the singles off the spindle in the form of a ball? That will really help me help you.
