Ok, guess who is selling ready made YoYos?????
Yep, I was at Joanns Fabric Store the other day and there hanging ever so probablly not made in the USA, packages of small & meddium YoYos... 50 yoyos for $16.99
Oh for goodness sakes, who would spend that kind of money when YoYos are so easy to make and from scrap fabric no less. YoYos are a great "Take-n-Make" project...
If I were to buy them I would buy them from a handcrafter on one of the many wonderful etsy shops before I bought them at Joanns.

i have been looking for a pattern that you use the yoyo's for a doll or clown i remember my grandma had one but i don't know how the head was made.
katmom Posted - Jul 23 2008 : 9:19:45 PM
yeah! Deb, we have converted you into a "yoyo addict"...
I keep a "to-go-tote" w/pre cut yoyo circles, mini scissors, small spool of thread & 2 needles. Infact the little tote I use was made buy dear Kathie(above). It came w/some mini Holloweenie Aprons so I use it for my yoyos cuz it is orange (easy to spot) & totable...Thanx Kathie.
Infact I had it with me today as I sat in the waiting room while my daughter was in w/the doctor.

Grace & T:

Thanks for the tutorial & site. I had no idea they were so easy. I wonder if I have enough time to cut some circles out before I leave on my road trip tomorrow..... 6 hours in the truck - I could do some stitching on my way.

This is going to be fun!

Hey Deb,
the plastic templetes are a great way to get started on making yoyos because it helps you develope a stitching pattern.
I however learned by trail & error...Using a CD I trace my fabric on the wrong side, pin 3-4 peieces of fabric together & then cut out the circles.(as opposed to cutting each circle out individually).
With the wrong side of the fabric facing you, use your left hand fingers to hold down the edge (1/4")toward you and simply do a running stitch(1/2"), continue around the circle until you get to were you started. It takes a few times to get use to holding over the 1/4" edge as you are stitching in a circle, but once you have made a few it becomes so simple.
Also, it's best to use thin/soft cotton fabric. Bulky fabric, polyester, ribbed or hard stiff fabric does not gather as well.
So once you have stitched down your 1/4" hem, gently pull the thread to cinch up the yoyo, this is where it will take you a few times to get use to cinching & manipulating the gathers, then knot off your thread & I just flatten my yoyos tween my hands.
Have fun and hopefully it will be a fun project for you and your daughters. They can use the yoyos to decorate nearly anything, the hems of jeans, sweater/Sweatshirt cuffs & collars, pillows, fabric purses, lamp shades etc....the ideas are endless. So have fun.

I've seen the ready made yoyo's as well. I was looking for one of those little plastic thingy's to make them. I need a picture tutorial - I'm a visual learner. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd love to teach my girls how to make them. Slippers with yoyo's on them!!! How cute. What a great idea for Christmas presents.

you are so right grace. love and laughter is what makes a home. believe it or not we left a very nice place in atlanta (we stilll own it dang it!) and came here to a simpler life. we havent ever been happier!
i bet those lsippers are cute! do you make the yo-yos with hand stiching or machine? right now my machine is broken. my grandson got ahold of it and messed up the little wire that keeps the tension right. i bought the part then got scared about messing with that part of the machine (this from the woman who has torn machines apart and put them back together repaired for 40 yrs??)and never did it. i wonder if i even still have that darned little part? *looks around*

Being mortagae free is such a blessing and a relief.
It doesn't matter the size of your humble abode, as long as you are happy & it is filled with love & laughter.

I forgot to mention(above), I also decorated a pair of cheapo house slippers by hand sewing on yoyos...they turned out cute.
So get to crackin' & stitch up some yoyos!

hi grace, such a cute apron! you ladies are gonna force me into getting my sewing machine repaired and using it! lol
your home is gorgeous! when i see pics of big beautiful homes it almost makes me want to finish my little cabin and add on to it, but that would take time and money away from other things like hunting, fishing, 4 wheelers, beading jewelry, etc, as well as my new hobbies of spinning and weaving. so i will just be content to have my tiny (24X24 outside measurements) unfinished, dry (no plumbing!), heated with a wood stove, paid for cabin in the woods *grin*

Mara(Rosemary) & Connie,
if you take a peek in my blog, go about 1/2 way down, you will see a blue & yellow bib apron I made. click ont eh pic to get a closer view & you will see close up the 2 yoyos I used to embelish with.
"T", I have the Heart shaped yoyo templete(large size) which I love but I make my regular round one w/o a templete, just faster for me.
I embellished a Wine tote recently w/ yoyo's around the edge( needed a cute bag for a gift bottle of wine) and it turned out cute, but Duh! I forgot to take a pic....
have fun yoyoing...

I saw the yo-yo's too! Who'd a thunk? BUT I must confess, I bought one of the yo-yo forms for making them. (I had a coupon so I didn't pay the full $5.99 for it!) We'll see how it works. Probably one of those things that I'll play with and go back to the "old fashioned" way. I have a dress yolk I want to put some on and a purse pattern that is so cute with them on the flaps....

etsy.com is a website similar to ebay.com ...but at etsy the focus is upon handcrafted wares being offered and they also allow members to offer craft supplies as well as vintage items that are 20 yrs old or older.

yo-yo's are round circles of fabric that are hemmed with a small running stitch hem(about 1/4 inch hem if that) then pulled tightly to create a "floret"..round puff type circle that resembles a little flower almost.
They were used years ago to create quilt tops and so forth..they have regained popularity in recent years and folks use them to embellish such things as handbags, denim jackets, curtains,to make quilt tops out of, and more.

what is an etsy? and what is a yo-yo if not a thing and a string? peace connie in alaska
Rosemary Posted - Jul 21 2008 : 2:43:00 PM
So, yo-yo isn't a thing-and-a-string that you amaze your friends with in 3rd grade? Clue me in, sisters!

A lot of gals aren't as "in the know" as we are. They couldn't tell you what "etsy" is, or probably what a "yo-yo" is either! LOL

Wow, last year someone posted about yo-yo fabric for sale. Who would ahve guessed? I saw a yo-yo coverlet for sale in a boutique store about 30 minutes from my home for around $300. It was made of sheer whit yo-yos. It made me think of the time someone, probably i nanother country, put into it.

I lvoe my yo-yos and making them is very relaxing. The relaxation can't be bought! LOL
