I was thinking about buying a Brother XR7700 sewing machine and I wondered if any of you have this machine and if so, what you think about it. Thanks!

Wow, $10 for all of that...amazing. I am going to keep looking. I can afford a deal like that! I did find one locally but they wanted $145 and although that sounds cheap compared to the ones I've seen on Ebay, I still couldn't tweak that amount out of my budget for a new "toy".

Don't give up on that 15-91. It can take time. I fell into mine years ago, not knowing what it was for years, only that it sewed like a dream. My sister coveted it like mad. Finally she found one at an auction for $10, cabinet, machine, stool, attachements, books, etc. Someone stole the attachments and manual, but I fixed her up with replacements. All I'm saying is keep looking--thrift shops, Craig's List, yard sales, auctions and so forth. 15-91s are more common than the more popular Featherweights, and waaaay cheaper. Good luck!

Sewcross, I am seeing a green monster over my shoulder regarding your 15-91...I have been looking for one for about a year and can't find one that fits my budget..they are getting rather pricey if you ask me. Gear driven, that's the machine I need.

I prefer the heavy old black sewing machines; they will outlast any of the modern plastic ones.

I have a Singer 15-91 in a cabinet and I love it. I am thinking about a portable Brother machine to take along to a quilting class. I had a portable Dressmaker machine that finally quit on me and I was told that it wasn't worth having it fixed. I'm not too sure about that. I have sewn on it since the '70s and I loved it. It weighs a ton but I really enjoyed sewing on it for years.

I have a Singer too! Actually, I have TWO! One I inherited from my mother when she passed away (it's as old as I AM!!) and another my husband bought me one year for Christmas because I couldn't "Drive" my mothers machine!!! (it drove him CRAZY because it was really hard to control the speed and it practically shook the whole house and messed up the TV reception!!!)
My "new" machine (by about 8+ yrs) is a "Schooling Machine," nothing fancy, but it DOES do heavy duty sewing-- Denim, leather etc.... It has buttonhole stitching, different zig-zag stitches and some other things. It has a bobbin issue, (bobbin drops out and makes a rats nest on the underside of the fabric being sewn ---GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!) but other than that it's been a FABULOUS machine. Honestly, I do most of my sewing by hand. I only use the machine for the BIG things-- and things I need to finish QUICK! But Singers do seem to be the most reliable.
Oh! come to think of it-- My FIRST sewing machine actually WAS a Brother! It wouldn't work right so I had to send it back. I decided NOT to have it replaced with another and got my money back instead. But the model YOU like might be much better than the piece of crap I got! Happy sewing! ~~~ Tracy

I have heard that the Brother is a good starter machine from my friend who owns one but she has had to take it in for repair a few times. Of course she has been trying to do machine quilting on it and I don't think the motor could take it. I am very partial to my starter machine of over 10 years. The strong and sturdy Singer! It only has 9 stitches so I could use an upgrade but it has served me well. I am sure if you are only doing light sewing a Brother will be fine. Just do a bit of research before deciding and decide what purpose you really want your machine to serve. If it involves heavy duty sewing you may want to invest a bit mre time researching machines. I have an old 1930's white in a beautiful wood cabinet that sews sraight as ever also. She only cost me $25 on craigslist.
