Do crocheters/knitters have any problems finding fingering weight yarn? My local craft shop, and even my local Joann's, doesn't carry fingering weight. The best I can find is a baby yarn that is still considered sport weight. I asked about it and was told that the companies (I assume she meant the companies that make acrylic yarn) have discontinued fingering weight. That surprises me because I see new patterns all the time in this weight. Is fingering only available in the fancy cashmere/silk/soy varieties?
Just wondering. My budget only allows for acrylic right now.

You mentioned local craft store...do you have a local Yarn Shop?? or maybe that's what you were referring to...anyhow, my local Yarn shop has all kinds of fingering weight in cotton, superwash wools, bamboo, corn, etc.

I just went through the same thing, trying to find fingering yarn for a baby afghan. I don't know why it's so hard to find either.
JoAnn's down here had some fingering acryllic from Bernat ,I think, but there wasn't much of a selection, just a few colors. You only got 1.75 oz skiens at around $2.25 per skien. The pattern I was wanting to use called for 23 ounces total and used 2 strands held together so I ended up using 1 strand of baby sport weight Bernat 5.6 oz skiens for 3.29 a skien. The fingering yarn was listed as a 1 for thickness on the side of the package and the sports weight was listed as a 3. I tried to find a yarn with the #2 on the side but couldn't. I don't think it's going to make much of a difference and seems to be working up great.
It seems a lot of craft stores are closing and alot of stores are cutting down thier stock. I'm like you Kimberly Ann, I like to feel and see my yarn and fabric before I buy it.
But...Mary Maxim has a great selection. I know a few people who order from them. I haven't bought anything yet but have checked out thier site. I've been having a hard time finding the varrigated christmas cotton and the acryllic holiday sparkle yarn down here for the last 2 years, so I'll probably have to go online for that. I'll have to check out that Knitpicks too. |

I love the fingering weight yarn (I am assuming that is about sock yarn weight) at our own Grace Gerber's website...alpaca..just lovely.

Since you like to feel the yarn first you might see if you can order color cards from on-line companies that have what your looking for. It may take a little longer with all the back and forth but that way you can be assured your going like what you order.
I've also found alot of great yarn on Etsy.com but your not going to be able to get color cards from the artists you find there. I've never been disapointed from buying "blind" off Etsy.

Any good yarn store should have lots of fingering-weight yarns, in wools, cottons, acrylics -- you name it. If, like me, you have no local yarn stores nearby, try Diana's suggestion of KnitPicks.com. The have many different fingering yarns (wools & blends) and I find they're cheaper than even JoAnn's, plus I think their quality is great!
