I started off making a rug out of a queen size flat sheet, with strips approximately 1 inch wide. I noticed about half way through that it was really starting to curl around the edges. I figured that I could flatten it out when I was done but then the curling became actual sides and the end product was a deep basket. It wasn't what I started out with but it turned out swell anyway. I took the remaining strips and fashioned a thick handle. I'm going to weave a bit of grapevine through the top of the basket and the handle to give it a bit more sturdiness, but it is surprising how well it stands up just on its on.

Anyone else have some unusual results from crocheting rags?

I forgot to increase on the last three rows, (watching TV)and I got a rug with a lip. This morning I took them out and redid. It lays flat. My nefmanys where cracking up stomping on my rug/basket. They wanted to know if thats how it catches the water.

if it runs up like that you have not made enough increases in your rug while going around. It really has nothing to do with the thickness (width of your fabric) or the tightness of your stitches you can have real tight or loose stitches but if you do not make enough increases it will always be a basket if you make to many you will get a rug with a wave action around the edges

Well, in the meantime, I am happy you have a new basket! :)

That's good advice, Jeannie. My stitches are always too tight. When I try it again, I'll keep it loosey goosey. Thanks!

If you want your next try to indeed be a rug (smiling, as mine turned out to be like a sombrero), take extra stitches as you round the oval ends. Go through the same place twice a few times each time you get to the curve, or just do it every so often as you go round, and it will lie flat. Or else really work on making your stitches almost baggy. I had a real problem with this, undid my rug nand redid it, and it still wants to curve up. ON the other hand, my daughter's lies as flat as can be. It is in the stitches. Keep it loose.

Yep, I'm pleased as punch with it so all's well that ends well. Trouble is that I'm not sure I could do it again if I want another!

The curling is easy to have happen with fabric strips. Its just because your stitches are nice and tight. The fabric doesnt stretch like yarn will so you will get some curling. Next time try making narrower strips or just staying loose on your stitches. Sounds like it turned out nice anyway!
