I just have a quick question about tying quilts. How many strands of embroidery floss do you use and how times do you try to knot your threads on top.

What a good idea Jana! I use a sharp darning needle to do my tied quilts. I have watched people use those cool curved ones..and I know it should work better for me..but I end up jabbing myself every single bingle time. I am just not that coordinated I guess.

I use a surgeon's knot. Even floss won't come out with that. You can probably google "surgeon's knot" and find a diagram

I usually use yarn or crochet thread and tie twice. The crochet thread is especially nice on baby quilts.

My deceased gran use to use crochet bedspread cotton to tie with.
and some times the embroidery thread

Usually you can get a cheap packet of needles sold as household needles or utility needles, it generally has a couple of curved needles that are perfect for thread for tying quilts. Someone also sells a package of two curved needles specifically for tying quilts. They are probably your best bet. OOf and another thing rises to the brain cell that works, I use a double strand of pearl cotton or the crochet cotton, and don;t tie it too tight because that can sometimes make holes where the ties are, (I know this I did it many times) just tie it loosely. How well does pearl cotton or cotton yarn pass through the material? what needle do you use that would have a sharp enough point, but a big enough eye? |

I usually use yarn, I like cotton yarn best..like peaches and cream type...but if I use embroidery floss I have used all six strands..I make a square knot at the top.

What a great idea to use pearl cotton! I'll have to try that on the next little quilt I make. I get my pearl cotton from Hobby Lobby. It is sold near the floss. Thanks Karin.

I do not use embroidery floss as it inevitably comes out. I use #5 pearl cotton and tie it with a surgeon's knot , which is just like a square knot except you put the thread over twice on the first part of the knot. Crochet cotton works well too. I had to retie all the quilts i tied with embroidery floss. I don't remember where I got this info, but I am having great luck with it...Karin

Me too. I also use a rayon yarn I have that is about the same thickness as embroidery floss.

I usually use the six strands that the floss comes in or I have used yarn. I only tie one knot.
