Hi everyone, this is my first official post as a Farmgirl... I have fallen in love with everything MaryJane!!

I want to embroider some pillowcases and some kitchen towels with those cute little old fashioned people, such as Sunbonnet Sue, little kittens, etc. that you iron on the picture and then embroider. I think they would be transfers and the ink eventually fades away when you wash them.

Does anyone know of any websites that offer patterns like that? I'm guessing they would be from the 40s and 50s. Thank you for your help.

I have enjoyed so much seeing all the beautiful things each and every one of you has made. And the fabulous blogs and websites. Oh, I just love it all! I'm so glad I found the Farmgirl Connection!!

Dear Karen, You are so sweet!!! Thank you so much for the nice welcome. And thank you too for the links to the different sites and your suggestions and ideas. I appreciate them all! You know I have to take a look at the aprons you suggested on this site. I was going to order the pattern for the frilly apron, I think it's called, the one with the ruffle around the bottom. I LOVE that one, but hey one won't be enough!!! So I'll definitely check those out. I saw the vintage embroidery patterns too, in MaryJane's book(s) and I will probably wind up making those. I need to purchase some tracing paper and tracing marker to do those. And if you saw my other topic about buying a new sewing machine, that's something I need too, especially to make my aprons, the Frilly Apron in the current issue of the magazine is soooo cute, and in the next issue of the magazine will be the patterns for the petticoats!!! I just love it all!!! Thanks so much,

Farmgirl Hugs,
Carol

Dear Carol, I am so happy you've joined in the fun around here. Welcome.
I bought lots of my transfers recently at Hancock Fabrics which is a chain, i think, as well as a website. the aunt martha's that i bought at hancock are not on the web but there are patterns... http://www.hancockfabrics.com/shopping/search/searchresultsmain.jsp?category=0&keyword=embroidery+patterns
I also Invested recently in a couple of embroidery books and kits complete with tranfers inside by Jenny Hart, these books are avail at any bookstore, but i got mine at Barnes and Noble. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?WRD=embroidery
Don't forget the wonderful vintage inspired embroidery patterns that MaryJane has in her books and at least two of her apron patterns. Especially notice pgs 228-243 of MaryJanes Ideabook-cookbook-lifebook & pgs 36 -37 & 52-54 of Maryjanes Stitching room. The apron patterns for sale on maryjanesfarm.comthat I know of that include embroidery patterns are the baby smock apron & Farmgirl Apron.
Also, in the past i have purchased some embroidery patterns from the craft sections of mccall's and simplicty patterns...but this has been infrequently though.
have fun! Karen - happy farmgirl #89

Hey Jess, I ordered the mermaid patterns from the site just listed that also has hillbilly patterns. Gosh they have ALL KINDS of patterns on there! www.colonialpatterns.com. I think they are under the Traditional & Vintage section. You all will love this site. They have so many patterns and it was such fun looking through them all!!

www.colonialpatterns.com has a few different hillybilly transfer patterns!! Have fun. I ordered some patterns from them a couple of days ago and can't wait to get them. I was able to find a set of flour sack dishtowels at KMart for around $7.00 I think. They're by Martha Stewart. I can't wait to get started on my embroidery!

When Walmart closed out the embroidery thread for a dime, I bought a lot for a special farmgirl. Was told by management that they would be stocking packages of assortments rather than individual skeins in what is becoming a craft section rather than fabric. I haven't seen them yet, but haven't looked either.

Yep, that sounds like the right guy. I'll have to look next time I go to Walmart. Thanks!

I love any of the patterns that have animals on them. I know another good embroidery site is www.homeberries.com THey sort their patterns by season. They are really cute too!
Jackie,I know my mom has a set of the hillbilly aunt martha patterns. She got them at walmart I believe. They have this guy with overalls, a stray hat and a crazy long beard on it. Are those the ones?
Carol, where did you find the mermaid patterns? I think they would be cute to do...Im a big fantasy fan and those would make adorable pillows..:)
hugs
Jess

Since we are on the subject of old embroidery patterns, does anyone remember a set of hillbillies? My grandma embroidered them on some flour sack towels and I remember them being pretty funny. It seems like it was just a husband and wife, barefoot and everything. Is there a place to find vintage patterns?

Thank you for the instructions, Jess. I am heading over to my super Walmart later today and grab one of those pens. I did go to Joann Fabrics and found the Aunt Martha's patterns. I bought one to try, it's so cute, Scottie dogs. I think I'm going to buy a bunch of flour sack towels and use those to embroider these on. I think I have seen the towels at KMart, part of Martha Stewart's line. I went online last night and visited all the sites everybody recommended and found the cutest coolest patterns. I can't wait to get started!!!! Which of the patterns do you like the best??? I saw some with mermaids, some with cute little bees, I didn't realize there were so many of these patterns. They'll probably work up fast because the patterns are actually fairly small.

Funny what you wrote, Jennifer, about the party line stuff coming in at Walmart. Luckily ours still has the sewing department, but it has been scaled back a bit, I noticed.

This is so fun!!!

Hugs, CarolBrigid

You put your pattern underneath your fabric and then you put the whole thing in a place where you can catch light underneath. Like a lightbox or window..or I even found that a glass table with a lamp underneath works great. Then you just use the pen to trace the outlines. This is a great pattern saver. Especially for thing like the Aunt Martha patterns that you really don't want to cut up or that have lost their ink from ironing on. There is another iron on marker that I know of, but it doesnt was out. It is more for outlining and you have to be very careful to sew on the lines to hide the markings. I know Wally World carries both of these. ..."Hi my name is Jess, I am addicted to Walmart..."lol
Both of the pens give you a lot of versatility. I've embroidered designs from everything from Aunt Marthas' to coloring book pages, to cartoons on a flip flop.:)
Best of Luck!

Michelle, a lot of the WM are getting rid of their sewing departments completely...it is happening across the country. I am not a WM fan but have to go in once in awhile when I cannot find something...and even our small-town, little old WM is eliminating the fabric dept for a "party supplies" dept meaning pinatas and crappy plastic favors made by little kids on another contienent.

Back on subject...try eBay for Aunt Martha's transfers...you can usually get great lots and even if they are used you still have a few transfers left since they were made to used several times. I've bought a lot 10 or 12 transfer patterns and paid no more than $8 total.

You may want to check Walmart but it seems that they are not selling ebroidery or cross stitch supplies anymore. None of the Walmarts around here carry any of this anymore. Not even floss. I have checked 2 or 3 here in Knoxville. I'm wondering if this is chain wide because my mom broght me some transfers that she got on clearance (for $.25!) at her Walmart in WV.

Anyone else notice this in your town?

Michelle

Hey Jess, How do you use the tracer marker with these type of patterns? Dumb question but I have never used the patterns before. I can cross stitch and embroider, so that part's not a problem. I'd rather use the marker, too. How do you do that? Thank you,
CarolBrigid

Another place you could try though I dont know if you are looking for online store types or what. Walmart has some of the iron on transfer patters. I usually don't iron them on if I can help it though. I have a tracer marker that I use. It's blue so its really easy to see and the pattern washes right out with cold water.
Have fun with your embroidery!

Marcy, There is a Joann Fabric store, not right in my town but close enough. I'll have to get to that store and look for the transfers you suggested. Thanks!

Oh Electricdunce, You have no idea how much gas money and bill money I've blown so I could buy some farmgirl treasures. Little antiques, yarn, plants, old linens. You're right, they are treasures. Dangerous? Yep. Fun??? You bet!! I feel like I've just made a whole slew of friends here, too! I already love it here.

Once again, a dangerous place to visit, we farmgirls are so full of information. I am very fond of old timey embroidery, I had no ideas there are so many shopping possibilities, I just got back from the opening of a local goodwill store, where I blew my $15 gas money on treasure, well it is treasure to me and I got my daughter a couple things...I should be locked down cellar for a few days...

Hi,

First of all, welcome!! You are going to love it here. Second, do you have a Joann's around where you live? They have Aunt Martha's Hot Iron Transfers in tons of different designs. You iron them on and they are good for three or four good stampings. If not, I would be willing to share some of mine.
Take care and welcome again,
Marcy
