Posted - Apr 23 2008 : 11:45:13 AM I'm a new Farmgirl and have just taken up sewing in the last few months. I've always done small mending and hand sewing projects, but just started using a machine for the first time and am creating much more substantial pieces (my mom has 3 new aprons).
Anywho, there are a number of nice fabric stores in my area, but I'd love some recommendations for unique online fabric providers, in particular those with lovely prints. (I have the Maryjane's calendar in my office and I can't stop looking at the beautiful purple flowered fabric in the dress of the April photo- it is lovely.)
I would love to visit people's favorite websites and for that matter fabric stores (I may just have to plan a fabric purchasing roadtrip for my next vacation!)

Posted - Apr 24 2008 : 2:57:14 PM These are some wonderful sites- so far I've placed as order at Hancocks-Paducah.com and have lists going for Bighornquilts.com and fashionfabricsclub.com - hurrah! Luckily, I live within 15 minutes of Fabric Depot and have a 30% discount card since I'm currently enrolled in a beginning sewing class.

Posted - Apr 24 2008 : 2:02:23 PM Robin, I went to that site and ordered some linen. It was very well priced and perfect for what I want. Thank you. I will have to check out some of the others next time I need something.
I like the convenience of on line shopping, but I enjoy the hunt for quilting fabric. It is very difficult to find clothing fabric lik double knits in local fabric stores or even Joanns.

Posted - Apr 24 2008 : 11:43:00 AM Bonne,
I'm just the opposite -- my goal is to NEVER leave the house (or at least never drive a car), so having fabric delivered to my house is the ultimate convenience for me.
Given the prices of truly elegant fashion fabrics (as opposed to quilting cottons or shirting or whatever) it is completely worth it for me to pay the shipping costs.
For instance -- Jo-ann's doesn't even carry Tencel or Wool Coatings/Challis/Double-knits, so if I want to sew with these finer fabrics (which I do) I'd have to travel to the high-end boutique fabric store and pay their mark-up. I don't mind doing this sometimes, because I believe in supporting local businesses, but I'd much rather buy overstocks or ends of designer bolts for a fraction of the cost from fashionfabricsclub.com. It really stretches my dollar, and now I'm spoiled sewing with these nicer goods.
Best,
Robin |

Posted - Apr 24 2008 : 11:32:01 AM Sherri, I think if you live close enuff to a metro area with lots of fabric options, the shopping search is half the fun. ;) I've ordered online many times, but really I prefer finding fabric locally. The hunt! hahaha But if you're living very rural, online is probably more time and energy efficient.

Posted - Apr 23 2008 : 7:16:50 PM Lavender & Peonies has free shipping so I don't mind using their site and with others it all depends on if it's a fabric I can find locally or not.

Posted - Apr 23 2008 : 5:06:37 PM I never order fabric on the internet because of the shipping costs - do you gals find that even with shipping it's still worth it?

Posted - Apr 23 2008 : 3:33:05 PM My favorite fashion fabric site is http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/
They have lots of odds and ends of GORGEOUS designer fabrics at rock bottom prices. I see many of their fabrics at our local extremely chi-chi boutique fabric store at a fraction of the price.
The only draw-back is that the stock is constantly changing, so if you see someone to-die-for you must snap it up immediately because later it will be gone. Which is always bad for the size of your fabric stash.
Best,

Posted - Apr 23 2008 : 1:58:54 PM My favorites is full of quilting fabric. My faves are: www.hancocks-paducah.com and bighornquilts.com
I'm sure I have others, but that is it for now. I miss our Hancocks Fabrics since it closed. Didn't shop there often, but did have "essentials" when I needed them. JoAnn's Fabrics is so dirty and smells funny that I don't go there unless I have to.

Posted - Apr 23 2008 : 1:05:11 PM My all time favorite is Reproductionfabrics.com. They have lovely fabric, and categorized by time frames. The lady who owns it also puts out a line of fabric from a old fabric scrapbook she found called the Dargate Book. It's fun just to look at all the lovely stuff. I also like Bighornquilts.com. They have a huge inventory and often have really nice fabric on sale.Laddybutton fabrics has a loveoy selection of fabrics too...Happy hunting.and welcome to the forum!..Karin

Posted - Apr 23 2008 : 12:04:16 PM Gawd! My bookmarks page for sewing is jam-packed, I couldn't begin to list. I'd start with Denver Fabrics as they have a link page that's interesting. Then start browsing blogs (ie: sewing/fabric) and google the same. http://www.denverfabrics.com/pages/static/lm/gensew_link.htm
