I have a multi size pattern and am wondering how you all go about "saving" it so that you can use it on all sizes? I need to make the smallest size and don't and to cut away the curved bits to mark my line because then I lose the other two sizes! I know of the flat areas I can just fold the pattern under- but what about the curves?

Alee, when my children (5) were little I would sew them a seasons worth of clothing in a weekend using multiple size pattern. I would just copy the pattern on to either a tracing paper that is similar to the pattern paper or a fiber similar to interfacing but lasted forever. I did this with all my patterns. That way when Nora gets older and the patterns need to be tweaked a bit you can make your own but tracing different lines to make your own size.

I just got a 10 in one pattern from Jo-Ann's for 99 cents! Thanks ladies! I also got a transfer pencil to transfer the lines.

Read the JoAnns pattern flyer VERY CAREFULLY when it comes. The .99 pattern sale day notice is usually hidden on some weird page in a little shaded box. If I need a pattern I'll plan my trip to JoAnns around that day, no matter how enticing the sales are on other days. I can always get a good deal on interfacing if I'm careful, but Simplicity 99 cent day is only once every few months.

Some flyers they have $1.99 days instead of $.99 on patterns. This is much better than the regular prices, but I hate having to pay that extra dollar for no good reason! I know if I have patience I'll get the good sale and can buy all the patterns I want (well, they have a limit of ten, but I don't think I've ever maxed out).

Best,

Robin

Alee - you can sign up for the Joanne's flyer and those have the notice of the .99 sales and every one of them has a coupon for 40% off one item or cut of fabric. (That's when I buy my chenille for quilts). I think you can do it online - http://www.joann.com/joann/

Do you get a notification when there is going to be a $.99 sale or is it just luck that you happen upon them?

I also just buy multiple copies of patterns I love enough to want to use through multiple sizes -- especially sewing for my daughter. I figure my time and effort is worth WAY more than the $.99 patterns cost when on sale. And I would NEVER pay more than a buck for Simplicity-McCalls-Butterick unless it was something vintage (out of print) that I would die without.

Fo expensive patterns that never go on the ninety-nine cent sale (Vogue or independent pattern companies, for instance) I always save my muslin pieces with the pattern so I can get a perfect fit every time. Refitting a muslin the next time I want to use a pattern is a much better way to get a good fit than trying to use a stock pattern size anyway.

Best,

Robin

When patterns are on sale (like now at Joann's~99cents for McCalls)
and I really like a particular pattern that I need multiple sizes of (that's currently offered), I'll buy more than one
and mark the envelope for the size I'll be using. For 99cents it's not worth the hassle of tracing.
Living in a major metro area I have the luxury of several Hobby Lobby's and Joann's that regularly run sales. Might not be as much of an option living rural.

Ah Sherri! That makes sense! I will have to buy some interfacing!

Another question- what is your favorite method for transfering lines and dots and such? Is there such a thing as a pencil that turns the lines into iron on-transfer?

Alee - all the patterns I use are multi-size and I have traced all the sizes off so I have all of them permanently. You can purchase the fiber like tracing paper to trace onto, or do what I do and buy super cheap nonfusible interfacing to trace them on to. It's a hassle at first, but so nice when you're done because you have all the sizes and the interfacing is much more durable than the original pattern paper. Just be sure you write on each piece which size it is.
