I'm trying to finish up a Quilt for my SIL Wendy who is in the Hosp. with Cancer. I have it all cut out and the pattern set, Do I wash it all first or can I just sit and stitch it together now? it's a simple quilt made of squares that when finished will have a Cross pattern on it. Many squares to get stitched together before the 14th so DH can take it with him when he goes to see his Sis.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents in. At Homemade Stitches, the only time we wash fabrics is if we are making a project that will be washed a lot after its used. Like a baby quilt. The batting that we recommend is Hobbs low loft wool. It quilts like butter and is warm in winter and cool in the summer. It also washs up beautifully. You will do fine. GOOD LUCK!!!

I usually wash my fabric, but once in a while, I go for it without washing them first.
If you already cut your pieces out, just sew them up. The key for simple block quilts is to keep consistent seam allowance. I would just put it all together and leave it ready to give. Or if you feel like it, after it is finished, you can wash it in cold and hang t odry.

I do not wash my fabric before I cut it because the sizing in it makes it easier to handle. The first wash the quilt gets is after it is all put together and quilted and bound. I use cotton batting (Warm and Natural brand) and I like the way the little bit of shrinkage puckers the quilt a little to make it look old.

I agree with you Debi, I never wash the fabrics first, I like the glaze the new fabrics have and since I handquilt it has a better hand in the process.
They are several schools out there about what one must do, but with a bit of practice you can change the rules and make your own.
Heather, I am sure your quilt will be beautifull and made with a lot of love will keep your SIL guarded in the hospital.

You do not have to wash your fabric before cutting it. It will make it look old fashion and it long run will be a very soft quilt. I never wash my fabrics, try one and see what you think, Ladies. I been quilting for over 25 years. I donate quilts for Wishing Star and have been ask several times ot design quilt. It really defends on your preference. Try one. you will like it!

Just go for it- it will likely turn out just fine! You should wash them first but each quilt has it's boo boos and they are still well loved. If you want to wash them now, iron them after and go from there. Otherwise just stitch it up, wash the top and the backing piece (not the batting though), iron them both and then finish it up...and hope for the best. I have done this many times and no one was the wiser. You want to wash it in cold and hang to dry, and tell your SIL to do the same.

heather, someone else might want to chime in but yes you wash your fabrics first, if you have already cut them and you wash them now then the size of squares you have may shrink. Not sure what to do now. sorry.

heather, i may not be much help but did you wash your fabric before you cut it out? I don't think you wash it again you just piece it together. Praying for your sis.
