I did a family Hisstory quilt a few years ago and thought you all might enjoy the pictures of it. My photography is not the greatest but you'll get the general idea.
Each block is hand embroidered with a significant event or occasion.
The center(a sprawling oak tree) has a limb dedicated to each of my children to stitch their name & the name of their spouse,as they marry, and even more room for their children.
I'll start with the overall quilt-

Autumn

Autumn, I am sure glad for whoever found this, I missed it and it is something not to be missed. I haven't done a family quilt yet and I should. Has me thinking on it.
Thanks girlfriend,

WOW! What a fabulous quilt! I have thought of doing a quilt for my Mother-in-law for several years now, but with appliqued hand prints of all of her children, their spouses, and all of her grand children. You got me thinking of that again. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing. I LOVE IT!! ~~~ hugs ~~~ Tracy

I missed this before, Autumn. What a treasure you have created! It's going to be(already is, really) such an important family heirloom.

Lea-
I thought about it for 2 years before I started- then one day I decided to start. I didn't really know how it would turn out- it just developed. I really love it and am so glad that it means something to my family. It is on my new guest bed!

Your quilt has a wonderful look - I would not want to change a thing if it was mine. It does look whimsical and personal and loved and everything that a good quilt should be. Quilts are so great. They keep us warm, they tell a story, they let us be creative and artistic and show love. I think quilts are the perfect art form. Gosh, how do you find time for all you do?

Thanks so much Jeannie- you're right- I have had a very colorful life!!!It is a work of love- but I keep laughing when I look at the pics that are posted- it starts looking kinda juvenile-
I guess I meant for it to have a whimsical look - can't say I had that much of a plan- except to tell the stories.

Of course our beloved pets have a square- I stitch each name on the appropriate square

Life changing events have squares as well- theses are times that mark chnge and shape our family.
This one is a housefire in Tenneessee on my due date for our 3rd child.
Thankfully I didnt deliver for another month.

OH,yes- you must finish yours,Sheryl-lyn
It feels so good to know that these stories will be repeated (with the help of pictures) for generations. Our society has lost the ability to keep family history alive through the spoken word. We lose something by not passing on family tradition- even if it is embelleshed from time to time!!

I'm assuming you all realized I distorted the specific dates etc. on these blocks- (too much personal info on adults isn't wise)

This block is chronicles our home school journey of 25 yrs so far! Each child's graduation date is stitched in as they graduate.

This square lists our many houses before we settled here on our home place.

This set of pictures is pretty special.
About 20 yrs ago I checked this book our of our local library and fell in love with this sillouhette picture. I decided to do it in embroidery. I did it(that's it in the pic) and framed it for a short while and then it was put away in the attic with some other old needlework I had done. There it sat for at least 15 yrs.
Then one day my 18 yr old daughter,Rebekah, came home (20 yrs after me) with the same book and came to show me this very same picture!

I couldn't believe it! She wanted to embroider it too!!!
Well we got in the attic and I showed it to her . I even dated it in stitches-

That was when I knew we shared the same love-stitching!!!

A few years ago the library started selling off old books and what do you think I found? Yep! That same book!
The square had to be a part of this quilt. It fits perfectly- and shows something my daughters and I shre-stitching!

Yes it is fully quilted and finished.
I just didn't quilt as much near the limbs and branches so that I can just slip my embroidery needle between the layers and get thos names on. It's small work so it goes on pretty easy.
Not sure if I ever photographed the back- it's all done free hand in swirls and curliques Very whimsical on the back- I'll look for a photo.

That's great! Thank you for posting that. Do you have a back on it? If so, how do your add blocks or embroider more on the limbs?
