I was just wondering if anyone has, or knows of, a good "Vintage Style Pillow Case Dress" tutorial or online pattern. It looks pretty simple but I think it would be nice to have some guidence on the first try. I have seen so many for sale on Etsy but I love to sew clothes and want to put my own creative spin on a pillow case dress for my two year old daughter. If I can't find some sort of pattern/tutorial online I might just make up my own.

i read the block on the one that uses elastic. it seams like she puts the elastic there instead of pulling the ribbon all the way. get it?
some do the arms first and then the tube for the ribbon. she does the tube first with the elastic and then the underarm area. (this sewn line closes the tube) ok. it is confusing! anyways. just a different way of doing that.
i love though her explanation of the J for the cutting area and the measurements there. very simple and understandable. i am sooooo making one!

You don't need a pillowcase specifically either, just use fabric cut out to that size. Kids border prints look especially cute.

For embroidery things, you can get some free patterns at patternbee.com
But, I highly suggest (unless you have a transfer pen/pencil) looking around at like, Hobby Lobby, and/or Joanne's, or Hancock's. Walmart used to sell them, but they stopped. Michaels and AC moore doesn't sell them either. They are usually only around 1.00. And you get several patterns, that can be used over and over. To see what ones are available go to colonialpatterns.com (these are Aunt Martha patterns). As far as I know Aunt Martha is the only one still in production. The others are out of print. (can still find reproductions online, and unused/used originals on ebay.com |

pretty much any child dress pattern for a bodice will work them add the pillow case as the skirt portion. if child is small enough you can get it from one pillow case if not use coordinating fabric or another pillow case.

oh my gosh...how cute are those. i too look and think i should do one. i am thinking that might be cute for easter dress for my dd 4. i'll give it a try. hey- is there anyone that has pillow-case type embroidery stitch patterns that go at the bottom? just in case i can't find one at the thrift store in time. thanks!!

Grace...Thats just what I needed! Great tutorial! At least I have something as a guide. Seems pretty simple! Thanks for going to the trouble to look for it for me! Oh, and definatly try the recipe on my blog..its Veeeery yummy and oh so easy :)
Alee, My mom has a Mary Jane book...I'm not sure what the name of it is but I'll check with her to see if there is a pattern in her book. Thanks for mentioning that! I need to get my own MJ book : )

MaryJane has a pattern for a pillowcase christening gown in her Stitching Room
book. It could easily be enlarged for a two-year-old. Do you have her book?

cute blog,,,,I am going to have to try your Bahama Mama Pork Chops....sounds really yummy!
I think your daughter would look cute in the pillowcase dress w/matching pantaloons.($2.25 pattern)

That sounds interesting...the dress made from the dish towl. Let me know if you ever try it..I'd love to see how it turns out! I'll check out brendas dress and see if it helps me along...thanks for the info!

I don't have one, but Brenda~past blessings has a cute "flour sack" dress hanging in her shop....don't know if she made it, but you might contact her since I think the idea is the same.
What a cool idea to make a dress (sun dress) from a pillow case.
Recently at a craft fair, an lady made cute childrens smock type aprons from a singel dish towl & bias tape. I bought one to see If I can make one just for fun.
