How do you make rag balls? I made some a few years ago so I could make a rug, which I did. So Now I don't have any rag balls. Felt like making some. So do you tie the strips together or what? And how about adding scent? What is the best way to do that?

Cora, sometime back I read a post right here on MJF (and it might have even been Nancy Jo's suggestion for a lampshade) ... anyway, she uses one of those sticky, roller type things. I have used one on my cloth lampshades ever since and it works great. Seems like it might work on rag balls too ????

I LOVE rag balls! And they make the neatest Christmas ornaments on a tree, too! I have a dough bowl full of them right now. My question is, they tend to collect dust and it doesn't come off easily. Tried the vacuum, but it seems to just stick. Any solutions? Cora

Oh What a neat decorating idea too! I haven't made these since I finished my toothbrush rug last year. What a great way to store them in a canning jar. You girls are a wealth of ideas and information.

I just love rag balls, Nancy Jo. I have a 1/2 gallon canning jar that I've filled with small rag balls. It looks so prim sitting on a shelf!

i dont know anything about adding scent to them, but when i make rag balls, which i used to do to make rag rugs with there was a way to attach them by laying the ends together, cut a slit through both pieces and bring the top one through the bottom and pull it through both pieces.
you can also te the ends it just has a different look.
i am up to my neck in bunnies today, but if you want me to take some pics of this i can get my dh to help take them and post them in the next couple of days.

Nancy,
First wad up a bit of stuffing or rags for the center (You can dab your scented oil here). Then just start winding your torn strips around the center piece. Put the not so pretty strips of fabric inside as they won't be seen anyway. Tuck the ends under as you go. Pay attention to the shape and colors as you approach the end. Wind the ball until you are satisfied with the size & color. Finish by tucking in the end.
Some folks are dipping these in scented wax. I thnk a dab or two of essential oil would do the trick though.
I REALLY like the look of rag balls made from worn out rag rugs. You just wash and dry the rug, unravel & wind same as above. The fabric is all faded & has neat ripples.
I don't like the rag balls wound on styrofoam. They just don't look the same to me.
