Finally had a chance to spend the day with my quilting friend for a day of beginners lessons. We were able to cut all the strips for a log cabin quilt and sew them together. I still have a few sewn strips to cut into blocks, then we'll be ready to layout and sew the blocks together.

I'm so excited because I invisioned it to be harder. One I got the hang of using the tools, measuring techniques and mastering that scant 1/4" seam things went along well. Of course if we hadn't chatted so much we may have finished the whole top, but I think chatting is part of the quilting process.

I can see though how I would get overwhelmed with quilt patterns, color combos and fabric styles. She has so much fabric and it was all beautiful. Where do you begin to decide which project to start first?

Anyway, mine is simple. A cute holiday flannel with complementary tiedied solids.

I think, for a while, my quilts will be mostly utilitarian. Can't justify spending the money on fabric until I've mastered things better. Dad is giving me his flannel and fine wale corduroy shirts to work with. I think I'll try a primitive star with those. I'm also saving all the shirts DD wears to the sheep shows to make a quilt. My friend was working on a tote bag for her mom that used family photos transferred on fabric. That would be cool if I could do that with DD's sheep pictures.

In the meantime maybe I'll use scrap fabric to make tote bags and work on my skills.

Just had to share what a fun day I had.

I think my illness is full blown and raging now. Went to the bank yesterday and Joann's is next door so I dropped in to see what they had. BIG MISTAKE :)

40% off cutting mats & rotary cutters. I bought a 24" x 36" mat and a set that had a smaller mat, a cutter and a 6" x 24" ruler ($26 on sale). Then my friend said to get a 12.5 x 12.5 ruler. Well, I found a set of 4 square rulers that was cheaper than buying the 12.5 by itself.

Three spools of thread (one to reimburse my friend) and two for me.

All said and done, spent $100. What a haul. I think I'm set now.

Cheryl - I haven't forgotten about the pix, but they're being held hostage :) I took them with my cell phone and now we can't figure out why it wont email them to me. But I will send them as soon as they are released.

Congratulations! I thought it would be much harder too. It was in my mind. I have made several quilts now, and each one has it's own story or it's own special fabric for the recipient. I'm glad you took the plunge. I'm sure now you'll be a quilter for life.

Oh no!! Now that the quilting bug has gotten you, you will be hooked forever. Welcome to the club. I have been quilting since I was a kid. Never bragged about it then, but I do now!

Thank you Sherri. That's very sweet of you to offer. Turns out my friend showed me the exact same patten from her collection. She has a ton of books and a file drawer with patterns for quilts and other projects like totes and purses. If quilting is an illness like you said I think my friend is terminal :)

Cheryl - I will post pictures, maybe tomorrow. DD has to do get them on the computer for me. I'm techno challenged in this area.

Oh, oh, now you have the illness. I have a great primitive star pattern - here's a link to a picture of one I made for Bridget (bohemian angel). I'll share the pattern if you're interested.
