Seriously, what is this? I found it in some of my mom's stuff that I am finally going thru. I may just be dense but I cannot figure out what this is! Thanks in advance!

and hey Jess if you are like my Paul you probably love the smell of the ink too..ha.
we used to have an old, old table top press in our kitchen when we were first married...it had a cabinet and lots of type and it was pretty cool actually..I wish we still had it now....but alas it was a monstrosity in the middle of the room back when we lived in a wee tiny apartment..so we gave it back to the elderly gentleman that we had bought it from..the elderly man died and who knows what happpened to this barn full of old printing presses and rooms filled with type..the really old fashioned cool stuff..even a machine where you could make your own type and everything..he tried giving the presses and supplies to museums around our area but no one ever wanted them..sigh..and oh the stories the old man could tell too about working for a print shop in our area way back when...he was writing a book and would tell my husband his stories..but he never got around to getting the book published and after he died his kids didn't really care. such a shame..but anyhow...yes..the old style of printing is so very neat!
Of the things we had bought or were given by the elderly gentleman ..I still have an old type set tray..what alot of folks tend to collect now for holding wee miniatures.
Anyhow..not to get way off track..

I have gone to school for years to be a printmaker..a real one. I have etched more metal plates than I can count. Although there are tons of printmakers out there who have done WAY more than me, the whole process, metal, acid, things that resist acid! I love it..one of these days I will put my college to work!

That is such a marvelous find. Why don't you submit it to Country Living's "What is it & What is it worth?" to get their imput. Of course, Jessica has already explained what it is but it sure would be neat to hear even more about. Very cool!

Hi there Susan..it is a printing block, probably used to make labels for the individual cans, the little space at the bottom was probably filled in by hand. Try using a brayer instead of a stamp pad and soak your paper first, then blot it dry, as a printing block really needs to press down into the paper fibers to do its job. Then use actual printing ink, you may need to thin it a bit with oil, depending upon the ink you have available to you. A good paper to try it out on would be an Arches or Rives BFK. These are good papers, just soak em for 8 or 10 mins in water, then pat em dry so they are not drippy. Back to the printing part, if a brayer does not work, which it should since this is all raised lettering, you can use a small piece of mat board and card the ink on and buff the excess off with cheese cloth, but mostly I think a brayer should work. The other is really only for lines that are etched into the plate itself.

They are quite heavy...copper? I think maybe brass? I tried to use a regular ink pad...not much luck. When I have more time, I will do a little research.

I'm in agreement with the others...but am curious, is it copper? It looks "heavy"....and that would indicate a print plate for a newspaper or circular. I like that it says, "from contented cows"....

Yes, it does look like a printing plate, but I think its for advertising perhaps for a newspaper??? cause it seems to be for Carnation evaporated milk, not for regular milk.... hope this helps! |
