I'm self-taught; did a lot of reading and research then jumped in a gave it a try. It was successful so I just kept making it, supplying a large extended family with soap.

I learned from a class on the internet (sorry, can't remember the source now) but it was for making soap in a crockpot. Its easy and I was very pleased with the results!

Laurie, there are some great subs out there for coconut. Palm Kernel oil is one (although you might have to order from an online supplier). Also, you could try a castile soap (100% olive oil); you just have to wait a bit longer to use those (they are slow to cure). Good luck!

I'd love to make soap but all the recipes I see call for coconut oil. My mom is highly allergic! *sigh*

I'm having the same problem. I had a closet totally devoted to my soap in my house. Now that I'm in an apartment it is a challenge where to store it. I asked on one of soap lists for ideas. One gal said she takes those plastic shoes boxes, puts the cut soap in them, leaves the lid off, and then lays a couple of paint stir sticks across the top. Then she stacks another box on the top of that and so on and so on. She also uses a sticky label on each box with the type of soap and the date. I'm going to try this. But the only place I have to do this is in the corner of my bedroom.
Corrine, I'd be happy to barter with you. I'm low on soap right now but will be making more next week. So it will be about 2 weeks before it's ready. Just let me know.

I took a class
When I make soap I try to make 4-5 batches in a day. I get about 28 bars out of each batch, so I too have soap everywhere. I make it in the kitchen ,but mix the lye and water outside.
I do have a nice drying rack that I bought from a gal in Alma ,wa with pull out shelves, with screem in the bottems. |

so true, kay! once i made my first batch of soap, i made 3 more batches in the same week. i had soap drying everywhere! i wish i had the space and time to make soap now, maybe i should try bartering for some. it is so much nicer than the store bought kind. |

I read everything I could get my hands on about soapmaking. Millers website is an excellent source of information. She will have easy recipes that you can use for your first batch. I also did lots of research on oils and butters for the effects they have on the skin. Here's a good beginner recipe. It makes about 2 lbs of soap. That way if it doesn't turn out right you haven't wasted a lot of ingredients.
14 ounces Olive Oil
9 ounces Coconut Oil
9 ounces Palm Oil
4.56 ounces lye
11.31 ounces distilled water
Scent at .5 ounce per pound of oils depending on what you are using.
I did run this through my SoapMaker program but I would recommend running this through a lye calculator yourself. Majestic Mountain Sage has a good one. http://www.thesage.com/calcs/lyecalc2.php

I took a class for my first batch of Lard soap. After that I just jumped in and made it from recipes. All cold process. Live and learn!

The best website with a HUGE amount of correct information, that I have used throughout the years is http://www.millersoap.com These people are amazing. Great pictures, recipes, instructions!!!!
I printed off a whole binder full of their stuff.
Have fun soaping...once you start you won't want to use store bought ever again!!!
