my daughter is taking a fashion design class in school. we do not have a sewing machine at home. i used to have one, a Brother, years ago but i kept having so much trouble with it....i kept having to take it to get fixed because the timing wasn't right???? anyway, i finally threw the thing away. i am not good at sewing,.....only God knows where her sewing genes are coming from!??! could you girls give me some feedback on brands/types of sewing machines that you have had good luck with? i went to walmart and they had a couple...Brother (which the lady said she had and she's had great luck with it) and singer. (also, is it better to get a simple one or one that can do a lot of different types of stitches?) or should i go to a sewing store (do they still have those??) and get a different brand machine? let me know what you think. thanks!! |

thank you ladies! i'm going to look into that bernina machine, probably the most basic as alot of time i find that the more it has, the more that can break. and now....for the search....!!! |

I "third" the bernina vote. I have one about 25 years old too. A few years ago I was going to give it to my dd, & went looking for another. No way. My machine & I are on the same "wave length", why try & break another in.
We got our dd a bernina 1008, I think. Basic non computerized model, not beranet, but a bernina. She loves it.

i second the vote for the bernina...i have one and also a husguvarna. the bernina is just as good for everyday use and far less expensive.

You could also look at places like craigslist for older ones. I have a sears from the 80's, a metal machine made in Japan, and it's both sturdy and good, and can do a lot of stitches. Would probably be really cheap. Apparently all the machines are plastic now...hmmm...

I have a Bernina (?). I have had it about 25 years. I bought it new, but a year old model as the year I got it they came out with a computerized model. It's a great machine and works well with all fabric types. I used it to make 75% of my families clothing including mine when my 5 children were little. It has seen many a yards of fabric. I also have a very old Singer (50's) which I use for VERY heavy fabrics and leather. My girlfriend has a new Brenina that she uses for quilting and loves it. My mother has worker with Singers her whole life and has produced beautiful items. She has had some issues with it but minor and it is easily 30+ years old. It has a lot of specialty cams and I think that could be the problem. I like the plain jane models that I can manually work. I have also worked on Brothers at the high school level and they seemed to be good also and not as pricey.

You know I went through this about 6 months ago and then just decided to jump in and bought a Janome Sew Precise!!! I do really like it!! My family members who have tried it like it too!! Good luck in your search!!!

Sue the best machines I have ever owned have been the old sears and singer from the late 60s and 70s, I use a machine on heavy fabrics I want a machine with metal gears, the new machines do some beautiful work but wont hold up for me,I can tell you two new ones I dont reccomend, white and nechi, I have an old white that is one of my favorites tho
