I've used kool-aid and food coloring to dye both fiber (roving) and yarn - animal fibers (alpaca, wool, llama). Works GREAT, you can get some really bright colors! fun stuff.

I dyed some wool sock yarn for socks--hot water, vinegar, etc. It worked very well and has lasted. I wear those socks often and they haven't faded at all. They are at least 5 years old now.

I have used this method for dyeing and added a bit of white vinegar, the same as in dyeing Easter eggs and it helps to set the color. I like the sublte shades that you get. If used on natural hued muslin the shades have a bit more depth such as the coloring of Country colored embroidery thread. I let it dry and then give it another dip until I get the shade I am looking for. I dye both fabric and yarn. If I am using the fabric on a quilted art piece, such as a wall-hanging, I don't bother to pre-wash before cutting and stitching. On bed quilts or wearable art I will pre-wash to prevent running colors. You can also dye 100% cotton thread after first washing out any sizing to get just the right shades for thread art projects! And you can't beat the price either

I've used Kool-Aid on cotton muslin (used grape Kool-Aid to get a pink color) and it worked well. No problems with it washing out or anything!

I thought I'd read that the koolaid works on Wool only and will be colorfast. I haven't tried it yet.

I just read that in a crochet book that I'd gotten from the library! So weird that you brought that up. I have never tried it, but it sounds interesting.

I wonder if it's like tye dye where you need to put it in a hot dryer (isn't that it?) or something along those lines.

i tried to color my hair with koolaid once, but my bff bought the kind that already had sugar in it so it was a sticky mess. we ended up resorting to food dye. i put pink strips in mine and he did the entire front of his head green!
