I am getting a wheel, not until March now, but is a lazy kate something I would want? I am a beginner, and don't know much about spinning. What does it do? I am spinning right now on a drop spindle. I have made a scarf out of my handmade yarn, and just love it. I call it my unique novelity yarn. I am also carding a blend of my black and white wool. That is turning out really neat looking.

i'm going to. actualy, my best friend wants to learn to, so i have to practice up to teach him. i have several pounds of wool that arn't spinning themself!

absolutly beautiful! it makes me want to pull out my drop spindle and try again...maybe next weekend, this one is full.

I should of told you all. I cast on 14 ( I think it was ), knit the first row, then knit one, yarn over, and knit 2 together. It worked up lovely for my unique novelty yarn! I tried doing knit 2 purl 2, but the scarf was way way too thick. It took roughly 75 yards or so. You can see my thick and thin yarn. But it adds something special I think.

Thank you ladies, or should say spinners!! I think I have seen them before, now that you all have described it. When I plyed my drop spindle spun yarn, I wrapped it from the spindle onto toliet paper rolls, placed them in a basket, and plyed my yarn. Humm maybe I could get my husband to make me one??? I will go see if I can post a picture of my scarf. Thanks again

My wheel came with a lazy kate..separate. It would be easily made if you don't have one. You WILL need one unless you plan to use all one ply yarn. Two ply is much nicer for knitting and stuff. The castle or travel type wheels usually have one built in, but the saxony style you sit it on the floor separate to use.

My castle wheel has a lazy kate built in and I don't know how I would make plied yarn without it.

Funny you should ask.... I too am a beginning spinner and last night I started to ply my yarn that I was currently making. I put both bobbins on my lazy kate and the yarn kept getting twisted together before they got to the wheel. I think I must have too much twist in it, anyway, I took one bobbin off to keep them separated until they got to the wheel and I had a HECK of a time trying to find somewhere to put the bobbin I took off the wheel, to hold it while I plyed. I ended up putting the bobbin on a long wood dowel I keep for turning stuff, and sticking the down down into the weave of a basket to hold it upright. I say, yes, for sure a lazy kate is necessary, and I wish I had 2 so I could keep those bobbins separate!!

Michele,
A lazy kate holds the full bobbins of singles while you are plying 2 or more singles together. Some Ashford wheels have built in lazy kate's, while other wheels such as my Lendrum have separate lazy kate's. IMHO a lazy kate is a necessity, I can imagine the mess I would have if I didn't use one!
It's such a sense of accomplishment to me when I knit an item with my handspun. If you get a chance post a picture of your scarf.

i would love to see a pic of your scarf out of the yarn you made. i have a drop spindle, but am never happy with the yarn i make on it. blah! i bought an antique spinning wheel, but it needs a few repairs that my pa hasn't gotten around to doing yet.
