Posted - Jan 24 2008 : 8:21:17 PM I think I burned my self out this Christmas...I really enjoyed knitting and then I gave myself a deadline, and then I just stopped altogether. I'm saddened by it, but I can't seem to get inspired. Started a hat tonight and I don't even like the way the wool is working up. Don't know if it's because I'm so blah, or if I really just don't like it... Anyone else get dissolutioned with their "creativity" deadlines?

Posted - Jan 29 2008 : 1:18:59 PM Kim, that's how I feel. I started a beautiful scarf for my youngest BIL (18) out of Malabrigo, and a hat for my other BIL (22) from another shade of Malabrigo...the more I worked on them, the more I thought: they're not even going to care and I'm freaking myself out over time constraints and then, as predicted, I just stopped working on them. That scarf...I'm telling you, it seemed like it NEVER grew any length, and my eyes would go cross from reading the pattern.
I love to make things but I never have anyone in mind and that's what I'm going back to. Making stuff, and when it turns out lovely, it goes to whoever I want it to go to. Like the hat I made out of this beautiful hand dyed asian wool...my husband LOVED it and eventually, it became his. I hadn't planned on giving it to him, but now it certainly suits him.

Posted - Jan 29 2008 : 1:13:38 PM I STILL haven't finished my Christmas knitting... mainly because I knew it HAD to be done, and that bummed me out. Instead, I've almost completed a sweater for myself and I have other projects for myself in the works. I think I've decided that I'm not going to volunteer to make stuff for other people... which is hard, because I see so many things and think "My mom (or sister) would look good in that." Instead, I'm going to teach them to knit, so they can have the same pleasure of making something for themselves. What is making me happy right now is knitting things for myself- something I NEVER do.
I was going to suggest exactly what you are doing- find eyecandy to look at. I spend time on ravelry everyday looking at what others make.
Have fun! Kim in NC |

Posted - Jan 29 2008 : 12:39:24 PM Thanks girls. I'm getting there, I guess....I haven't picked up my hat that I started but ended oh so quickly, but I am looking at patterns and things again, so I may get back into it yet! Donna, I'm exactly where you described...I think I made too many scarfs for Christmas as gifts and they were very detailed and I might have fried my brain :)

Posted - Jan 26 2008 : 07:27:15 AM Jonni,
I've had the same thing happen to me and I really hate it because knitting is my one true passion. I usually take a break work on some other crafty things for a week or two then I find myself wanting to feel the fibers running through my fingers again. Usually I will pick up something that is a quick knit just to give me some instant gratification. That usually gets my creative mojo flowing again.
Hang in there you'll want to knit again soon!

Posted - Jan 25 2008 : 10:59:25 AM Do not give up!!! There are families out there that would appreciate your hard work. TRUST ME WE GET THE LETTERS! If you do it for others it makes you feel so much better!!!! I would encourage you and let you know that knitting does not have to be work, but a blessing to you and others

Posted - Jan 25 2008 : 06:36:32 AM I'm glad I'm not the only one, then!!! I have taken a break to embroider my patches and things like that, but nothing really significant. I think my head, too, is in the garden catalogs.
I'll get back into it, you all are right--I'll just give it some time. Like I said, I'll probably get back into it just as the weather turns warm!

Posted - Jan 25 2008 : 03:11:56 AM I am like Bonne, I seem to jump from one thing to the next because I am an 'everything or nothin' kind of crafter! I have often thought about creating for a business but I feel that the deadlines and need to make money might spoil my hobby for me. I just made some fingeless gloves for a girl at work. Really, really easy, but I could not wait to get them done! I have found that if you are in the middle of something that you are doing 'just for fun' and it is not fun any more, put it away in a big zip-loc bag and it will wait for you! (my stripey poncho has been waiting for me for 3 years now!) Angie.

Posted - Jan 24 2008 : 8:46:33 PM I craft in cycles~knitting or sewing or soaping or beading etc etc. Lose interest in one and pick up speed with the next. Once I lose interest, it just becomes a chore, so I just put the supplies away and know that it will spark up in months to come.

Posted - Jan 24 2008 : 8:27:49 PM You're right, I'm sure. I keep looking around at scarves and hats people are wearing, I keep thinking "that's some extra $$$ I could make" and then I poop out on the third row.
I'll probably get to feeling it again when the tulips come up
