I agree with the other gals....dishcloths and scarves and afghans. Dishcloths and squares are a great way to practice your single and double chain.....making the stitches a uniform size. Plus, you can try out different patterns. Learning to read and follow a pattern can be frustrating sometimes. Doing a small version can be helpful. AND these practice squares could be assembled into a number of items.....afghan, scarf, purse, pillow, etc...

I just got Clover Soft Touch crochet hooks, and they're really nice! They have a metal hook and an ergonomically shaped larger plastic handle that has a soft grip spot on it. They're supposed to be great for arthritic hands (which I'm getting already!).
I've never tried a wooden hook, but they sound interesting.

There's someone on Etsy that makes wooden crochet hooks, if anyone is interested I'll find the link for you :)
I still crochet pretty basic things, I do a lot of afghans and scarves...good thing I know a lot of people who like to have homemade ones...lol I need to get together with my grandma to have her teach me some more advanced things because I haven't been able to figure out some of the things I'd like to try by teaching myself like I did with the basics.

granny squares are a great way to start..... you can turn them into so many things, scarves are another until you get comfortable with crocheting. keep us posted on your progress.

Is your wooden hook a maple one made by Ed Jenkins? They are like magic to work with...got all of the super big ones through size "U" I believe.
I taught myself to make granny squares first then I evolved to everything else. Granny squares are a good beginner practice since there are so much things to create from them and you can make them as large as you want to! They really give you good practice for reading a pattern 
Ideas that pop in my mind...Make large grannies and use to cover the fronts of readymade cushions. Slippers (line with polarfleece before sewing up...A shawl or poncho....leg warmers,...wrist warmers

Granny squares are simple and can turn into dishcloths, afghans, or bath washcloths. Hope this helps. Check out the Bev's Country Cottage website - www.bevscountrycottage.com for some cool free patterns or go to the library and get the book "Crochet School". That's how I learned crochet.

Dishcloths and scarves! Also, simple lap blankets, you can make squares and join them together.

It is a pretty good sized hook. Size M and made of palm wood. I love how it feels in my hands =)right now i'm just playing with yarn and trying to get the feel for it. Keep the projects rollin'

Dishclothes are nice, or you could make a lap afgan. I love crocheted blankets- especially if you use the "Homespun" type yarn! Nice and fluffy and you get to use a huge crochet hook so it doesn't take too long :D
