Girls, Help me out here. I was reading blogs and read one where some girl was making purses and other items out of wool sweaters. I think she was also making penny rugs...? I found 2 really nice 100% wool sweaters at the thrift store yesterday...only 1.00! I also wanted to ask if 100% lambswool will work? I would love to learn to do this.

I made mittens for my kiddos and husband out of the felted sweaters. I lined them with polar fleece and then made cuffs out of ribbing for the inner layer. They love them! great for snowy playing, etc. If they get wet they're still warm!

joy, welcome to the wonderful world of felting.
i love it cause it gives me a chance to craft knitted items even though i cant knit and probably never will (i have tried many times).
here are some of my tips.
any kind of natural woolen garment can be felted.
you can use items that are 70%+ woolen and have sucess. if the item is cheap enough and you just love it, give it a try.
after it has been felted it is pretty foolproof and you can then cut it like any other "fabric". so just create away, it is really fun!
any item you can construct can be made with felted knits. in our neck of the woods, the thrift stores sell black bags loaded with knits for 1.00 at the end of the season. sometimes they are already "felted" and thats why they didnt get purchased as garments, so be sure and check out your thrift stores at the end of the winter and see if they also have this policy.
keep us posted on your progress.

love
fran

Felt them and then make mittens by tracing your hand (with fingers held together and the thumb out a bit) about an inch out (one half inch for seam allowance and a bit extra to get in and out- cut two layers and stitch up right sides together. Make sure you line up the bottom edge of the sweater to where your wrist will be so that you have a finished edge there.
Hope that makes sense.
