Does anyone make their own socks? Like the ragg wool type? Just curious to see how difficult they would be and if it would be worth it. (bare in mind that I've never crocheted or knitted anything but a string, )
This started out as a joke really. I ordered some from LLBean and the girls teased me that I wasn't sticking to the deal, and that I had to learn to make my own.

bonne,
the "four strands of yarn" is a little vague. is this 4 strands worsted? i have a whole stash of yarn and these socks look so fun!

Hey Jenny - I went to a knit shop yesterday to buy some wool (my spinning wheel is supposed to arrive today!) and while I was there, I saw the Cottage Creation flyers. I remembered what you said about the Iowa Cruise sock, so I bought one. I had always used fingering weight yarn to make my socks, but thought I'd like the worsted weight. Well, last night I sat up and made one sock when I couldn't sleep and Wow, do I ever like it!! Thanks so much for the mention of this great pattern. I really like the bit heavier sock for winter and I think these are still light enough to fit inside my cowboy boots. Thanks again! (PS, wish me luck with the spinning later today!)

I make socks too.
I find that they are much warmer
I make them with baby yarn
and all sorts of different yarn that is called
fingering yarn; or has the weight no. on it
Many of todays magazines will have the weight of the yarn
like 3 on it and that is fingering yarn.
Knitting socks at first was a strange thing to me; but
after I got going on a simple pattern it got easier. pinkroses

Hi Sherry,

Sock knitting is my sanity knitting when I'm waiting for doctor appointments, kid activities, etc. Starting with a simple project like a dishcloth or scarf would allow you to learn the knit stitch and purl stitch. After mastering those two stitches you could move on to socks. I knit socks using the magic loop method (1 long circular needle), I hate fiddling with 4 or 5 small double pointed needles.

Do you have friends or a local yarn shop where you could get beginning knitting lessons?

I knit socks all the time, but I agree...you need to get comfortable with simpler projects probably first. For socks you generally use double point needles (some use straight needles and make a seam..which I don't like, or use two circulars, which I havn't tried) Double point needles are not bad to use but they do take some getting used to..feels like you have a handful of sticks at first..haha
My favorite simple sock pattern..that uses worsted weight yarn...is by cottage creations. It is called "Iowa Crew Cruise socks". It is a little booklet with very very detailed instructions.
I like the "family socks" pattern in the book "Homespun Handknit" too.
have fun!

This is one of the best easy slipper sock patterns I've used.

All garter stitch (plain knitting)
She used to have a picture on there , but I don't see it now.
This is what mine look like. I used some fuzzy "fun/fancy fur" yarns in odds and ends to use them up, so they are all poufy looking:

Thanks. That's what I thought but just curious anyway. I bought myself a beginners knitting instruction book a while back and haven't really looked at it. I'll start off with the bookmarker, lol!

Yes, definitely start with a scarf or similar.

I make socks and the ragg wool kind are much quicker, I think, than the thinner yarn type. They would be a bit challenging for a beginning knitter. If I were you, I would start practicing my knitting with simpler items, just to get the knitting stitch down to where it is more automatic, then move onto more difficult items. When you get to socks, maybe find someone who has done it before, or if you live around a knit shop, take a class. That's my advice, for what it's worth!

I just saw your name "Chicken Necker" and I was rolling with laughter. Now that is a name with some character. I will ask Mary, my daughter about the sock question as soon as she finishes filling out reciepts and maybe she will get to tell you about this. What a project for someone who has never done anything but a string. I knit and have never done this!! Thank you for making me laugh out loud!!
Hugs,
Pauline
