I was just at a garage/estate sale yesterday and saw a very large box of what I think must be old embroidery thread. They were all on large round spools and where wrapped around it like a ball of yarn. I want to buy it but I have no clue how much to pay for them. I also am not sure how old they are. They appear to be in very usable condition. At the same sale they had tons of hand embroidered linens for $2 each. I had to control myself (good thing I didn't have much cash on me). That kind of stuff doesn't sell well here so I think that I might be safe going back today to buy it for a good deal.
Any thoughts on what it's worth before I go back today?

Bummer, Emily, but you learned a quick lesson!
At garage sales I don't bother with trying to figure "what's fair market value".
They usually want the stuff gone, so offer low and see how it goes from there.

Don't you just kick yourself when you pass something like that up Emily!? I too have been "cheap" and later ask myself "what WERE you thinking?!" Seems like most of the "old stuff" has been either bought up or throw out in the area I live in, so I get pretty excited over old sewies. Bet you'll be ready next time!

most old thread actually reads boil fast as people boiled clothes and linens to clean them. When I see thread like that I always buy it

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

Well, I went back today a little later then I wanted to and everything was gone! I could not believe it. I guess it just was not meant to be. Oh well, We have lots of good sales around here. I just need to stop being so cheap ;)

The only thing I would be careful of with old thread is that it is colorfast..it may have a label that says whether it is or not.or you could test it by wetting some and seeing if it "bleeds". Otherwise..sounds like a great fun deal you found!! I can't reist stuff like that and am always amazed when it isn't snapped right up!!

I envy you the embroidered linens.....I would buy them all, just can't find much of that here and it is one of my downfalls. Don't know much about the thread, I guess if it seems strong it is probably fine.
