Posted - Oct 16 2007 : 03:31:36 AM Hi gals,
Well, I have been living in my home about 5 months now, and still haven't pulled out my rubber stamping/paper crafts. I want to sit down and be creative..it is like an instinct for me to have that time just for myself...but I don't know where to do my crafts. At my old home, which was much bigger than this...I would RS in my room, had a little corner set up with a table I got at the the thrift store...but I don't have the room here. It also would be better for me to craft in more privacy, but with my DH gone, I feel like I need to be closer to the kids, not shut up somewhere in a room. So, I was wondering if you all would be kind enough to share where you do your crafting. Do you like being in the main flow of the house or set apart in your own little area? Do you like having things available all the time and ready to craft or do you put it all away when you are done? It would be nice to hear how others solve these situations for creativity purposes. I want to start making cards and stationary again...I have new stamp sets and accessories I haven't even cracked open...what a shame...And finally, do you ever feel guilty if you sit down and craft during the middle of the day when you feel like you should also be doing chores or something else in the home? Thanks for your thoughts in advance...Warmly, Erica |

Posted - Mar 12 2008 : 06:36:03 AM When my husband was ill his bed was set up in the dining room ( so he could be close by and part of family activity) and I did any crafting or sewing in the living room. Pictures somewhere as Nancy Jo says. But now I use the dining room table and just got a new dresser to keep in there to keep stuff in. Embroidery can be done just about anywhere. Usually in my bedroom where I have a big chair and stuff handy. That's it. MB

Posted - Mar 09 2008 : 7:29:02 PM Over the years I have had my sewing machine in a closet, dinning room table, kitchen table, basement, and corner of a bedroom. Storage was portable and you had to be careful of pins and needles in the carpeting when you walked through The 'table times' were when the boys were little and I wanted to be near them. I have sewed on the machine and embroidery with boys in my lap "helping" . those were fun years, but I also dreamed of the day when I could go to my own space and not be interupted. Now everyone is grown and moved out and I have a sewing room with everything in one place. i love to go there on weekends. The best part is now there are some granddaughters who love to come "help" me sew in my room. and I am teaching their mom (my step-daughter) how to sew. Some times wishes do come true.

Posted - Mar 08 2008 : 5:03:47 PM I usually crochet while I watch TV so I have my supplies behind the couch. I don't really like to do it in a quiet place, I get lonely. I have to do it in the middle of everything even if it's a little messy.

Posted - Mar 01 2008 : 7:25:03 PM I agree Denise, a mess follows creativity! In some cases here, proceeds it! When I'm finished working for the day you can barely walk through that room. I usually tidy up every few days as I can't stand working in a mess. I can't start our school day in a messy house either. My brain seems to just overload & shut down.
Corrine! The idea of walking and knitting! I don't even knit sitting still...and I can hardly "walk & chew gum". I'm impressed!

Posted - Mar 01 2008 : 4:49:29 PM I keep my sewing/stitching/crochet/craft stuff in the living room which has sort become the sewing room. We added on a family room, walk in pantry and office. We have 9 rooms now but they are all small except the family room. Since we watch tv and everything else in there the living room has pretty much become available. Sooooooooooo... it has been claimed. It is not exactly the neatest room in the house now though. How can you be creative without being messy? I can't seem to though I do like things organized and straightened up when I'm not using them.

Posted - Mar 01 2008 : 11:21:23 AM wow! Some of you girls have some COOL sewing rooms! I am not quit as "official" with my crafting and sewing yet. I have a two year old so crafting time is a rare treat..BUT, I also have a very small house. Really there is no EXTRA room at all and hardly any storage space. I bought a three drawer plastic bin ( junky I know, but practical for now) that I keep in the coner of my itsy bitsy laundry room. One drawer has scrapbooking and paper craft stuff, another has sewing things and the third has fabric and patterns. I also keep decorative boxes throughout the house and keep embroidery stuff in them or whatever crafts are in the making at the moment. It keeps my projects seperate yet easy to get too. I donthave an extra room for crafting or any space in the bedroom so I just grab a project and unload it all on the diningroom table. I always put my stuff up each time i finish working with it because I hate having things scattered and also, my daughter gets into everything that is in her territory so I have to keep it picked up. About the time issue...I was just talking to my mom about that. I was supposed to sew two dresses for my sisters wedding but I was so overwhelmed and couldn't get myself to start on it so i passed the project on to her and she did it. The very next day I finifhed two embroidery projects and a scrapbook thing and I felt so guilty about it but we both agree that our craft time is our therapy so, its actually a good thing. I ussually wait until Abby is in bed before i start crafting and I make sure DH is happily occupied with his tv show. If I do get to craft during the day I try to make sure i have some idea of what I am going to cook for dinner before i let myself start getting into a project.
Check out my latest projects and all the news from my chaotic little world!

Posted - Mar 01 2008 : 09:54:38 AM I am lucky as we did our basement with a full bath and such and moved our two boys downstairs so I took over their room. All of my projects are in there, of course, I kept the table top computer in my new room (hubby bought me a laptop just for me to write with) after thinking about putting it downstairs into their room and deciding not to because then I would not know what they were doing on it (they are 13 and 14) and this way I can keep an eye on what they are doing on the computer and they don't even know because it is my room and I have every right to be in there. Which means they are in my room all of the time, not that I am not complaning, I love it that they still hang out with me and we talk about anything and everything in that room. If I am in the mood to knit or crochet, I do that in any room as it is so portable. I love knowing where everything is and that I can just grab what I want to work on. |

Posted - Feb 29 2008 : 11:27:55 PM i usually crochet while listening to tv.. so that is in a basket that moves around the room with me, my sewing machine and serger are each on their own tv tray, so i can switch them out when i want to use them... which ever one i'm using at the time is sitting to the side of the computer desk.. since it doubles as work space as well.

Posted - Feb 29 2008 : 9:12:30 PM As long as the photo posting tutorial was fresh in my mind I decided to post a photo of my workspace. It has changed a bit now...the lower brown desk is gone. The upper bookcase is atop another piece, and I have a WONDERFUL new shelf unti where ALLLLLL of my fabric can be seen at once and easily accessed.
And yes, it is always this tidy. Every day. Day in day out. 24/7. 365 days a year.

Posted - Oct 16 2007 : 10:18:08 PM Erica, Messy is creative!!!! And it is just part of the process, I think your computer desk would do wonders. You just need to have a space to do it, and plastic totes are your friends for storage. You can use them to store a project that you don't want to get bumped or moved. Just a thought. Have fun and create away. CS

Posted - Oct 16 2007 : 7:37:03 PM Wow, so interesting how all of you manage your craft areas...it makes me feel better if I decide to do my rubber stamping at my desk in the living room knowing that many of you do your stuff basically whereever you have room. I have so much rubber stamping stuff and my DH bought me a table at the Thrift Store for my birthday this year to set all my stuff up on. But this house does not have the room for that table. Now my computer desk is the type that fits in the corner and is quite large...and I am thinking that is the place to become creative again. I get pretty messy when I am in my creative zone and have a hard time keeping the area neat...Thanks for sharing your creative areas..it will be interesting to hear more. I will post when I have it all set up! Thanks so much, Erica |

Posted - Oct 16 2007 : 6:41:58 PM I am blessed to have a small studio/sewing room (which IS it-as more than sewing takes place there?)but alas not the one Jessie describes. Mine seems to always be a flutter with patterns and bits on every surface, even when it seems I JUST tidied up!
One "tip" for those who do messy work would be to situate your workspace near the kitchen or other area with a sink. Mine is just off the kitchen and it is so helpful when I do papier' mache or painting projects. I have a large center island to lay things out on, and I use the oven to dry dolls, tags, and other projects quickly.
For years I had no designated spot..a large basket (or other container) toted from roon to room worked just fine. I also take a work basket when I exhibit at shows to keep my hands busy. Makes for a nice conversation starter too! My scrapbook & paper supplies are hidden away in a Hoosier cupboard next to the kitchen table. I can tuck anything I am working on inside when I need to.
